Happily surprised by the reader

After really enjoying the Alex Verus series I was a bit hesitant to start this one. Gildart Jackson did such a good job in bringing the Alex Verus characters to life, I was afraid it couldn't be at the same level. But it is!
Although this book is mostly a way to acquaint the reader with this different version of a magical world, it still is gripping, exciting and fun. I really felt for Stephen, both in his mishaps and in his successes. And I love Hobbes!

The lengthy foreword almost made me return this book. So many words for simple information! And the narrator has a weird melody to her words, not to speak the mispronounciation of Roman names and latin words. But the information is interesting enough to continue listening. So, if narration is important to you, listen the preview first...

Nice story, good narration

I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant after all the bad stories about the narration, but I think she does a very good job. It is not fair to compare her with the previous narrator, Katherine Kellgren, who did a splendid job with this series (but I could hardly endure her with 'In a dark wood wandering', everybody has their forte and weaknesses I guess).
So my advice, give her a honest chance to grow in her role, and enjoy the story. The story is not the strongest in the series, but still very enjoyable!

C'mon, give us a next season please! It is fun, like a British sitcom in only audio. Characters are very nice, in an everyday kind of way. Don't worry about the content, the smuttiest word used is condom, so that's very low key.

Historical romance with some adult content. Dûh. It delivers what it promises, A strong male with experience, a curious innocent female. Not high literature, but perfect for some light entertainment. I am surprised about the people who are annoyed about the stupid story, of the sexual content, or the wrong decisions people make. It is fiction, people! Ever heard about escapism?
That said, my compliments for the reader. She is perfect, nice voice, no over the top male voices or accents. She makes the story a nice, easy to listen to escape from everyday misery.

i love Kara, but this book is a bit much for me.

I tried to love this book, really did. The picture on the cover is gorgeous. It tells about different kings of ancient Egypt, and how they handeled their autocratic reign. Good start, but it soon starts to be a bit....preachy? I too am worried about the right-shifting governments with autocratic tendencies, but not willing too pull an ancient world in service to point to bad leaders. Yep, I have a deep dislike for Donald T, but I am not willing to let his greasy fingers onto pharaonic Egypt. So, yeah, not for me this book. Sorry Kara, loved your previous books, not this one....
