Enjoyable even when he was sharing his worst times
Revisado: 10-05-24
I loved hearing the origin stories of such classics as Fr. Ted and IT Crowd. I laughed out loud many times throughout. While the second 3rd of the book isn't as jolly it is still an important part of, not only Graham's story, but so many more people's lives who have been upended by this cultish anti-speech ideology. Once again, we are reminded that you cannot believe what the likes of Wikipedia and legacy media tell us about anyone or anything. This is not the first time or subject they have been captured for. I look forward to the day when Graham can share his writing talents with us on TV again and happier times for all of us.

Historia
A mushroom hunting foray turns gruesome when Kate Shugak stumbles across a burnt, decaying corpse amid a grove of morels. Was the deceased the hapless victim of last year's forest fire? Why has no one reported him missing? And why wasn't he wearing any clothes? Absent evidence of foul play, the troopers are inclined to call it death by misadventure; Kate's instincts suggest otherwise, leading her down a path that requires her to confront issues of community, faith, and free will.

Disappointing - wasted a credit for this??
Revisado: 07-09-23
I've either read or listened to the previous 4 books in the Kate Shugak series and this was a huge disappointment. Once again we're given the old "Christians are hypocrites and God is some monster in the sky" trope. So original. That jolly dialog went on for some time and I think we're finally done. It's okay, I tell myself, religion isn't for everyone even if this author is getting it so spectacularly wrong. At least she's gotten it out of her system. But wait there more! In case the reader didn't get the message it is nailed home again and again. Where is the story? Where is the detecting? There is a little of it in there mingled with the pontificating against religion - Christianity in particular. It was particularly entertaining when the author whines one about how God likes all his little robots to do exactly as he says, or else. Then she mentions that the Kate's grandma is Russian Orthodox. Ummm at least the author could have done a little research about the Orthodox faith and free will.
If you're loving this series but don't want to wade through this particular book I say this one is easily skipped. Nothing is added to the main characters' storylines here and you won't miss anything by skipping it.
Now for the narrator. I've been putting up with her on the other books I listened to, but I think mixed with all the barrage of anti-religion I was having to sit through I have had enough with the narrator's grating condescending voice. If I ever come back to this series (which is a big "if") I plan to read the rest of them and avoid the audio version.

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Historia
It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man - Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars.

Revisado: 03-16-17
An interesting introduction to a new mystery series. It got a little tedious when it kept going around and around between the same 3-4 suspects. I needed to remind myself that there was a lot of characters and plot lines to set up for this first in a series. I liked the main characters and I enjoyed wandering around in beginning days of Regency England. I look forward to the next in the series but I hope the plot is a little tighter.

Since time immemorial the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace. Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels.

Fabulous Book
Revisado: 03-16-17
I got the audio because it was on sale at audible and I enjoyed Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files". It is completely different from his Dresden series and so unexpectedly good. I slowed down the narration speed just so I could slowly take in every last bit of this book and put off its ending. This is going onto my top 10 favorite books. I cannot say enough good things about this book.
Aeronaut's Windlass works so well because Butcher has created a whole new & interesting world with a large cast of well-written characters. This is a very layered world which I think can keep a reader happy through many future books.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Good thing it was a short-story.
Revisado: 01-04-17
I only stuck with the story because I enjoyed listening to Emma Thompson's fabulous narration. Otherwise, I'm done with 19th century Gothic novels for a while: "My young charges seem to be colluding with nefarious apparitions. I think I'll pretend I didn't notice and wait and see if they talk to me about it." Said no one ever. That sums up my frustration with this book.

great story - but PLEASE fix the mispronunciation
Revisado: 01-04-17
This was such an enjoyable book and I'm looking forward to the next in the series. The story's premise is quite unique. At times I started to feel a little claustrophobic, but once Bob jettisoned out into the universe I wanted to go with him. The narrator did a decent job of giving each of the Bobs a personality. It was still a bit confusing at times, but I was able to figure it out. He made the story move along and kept it interesting. However, he mispronounces "Archimedes" every.single.time. Stop!! just Stop. Please Audible figure out a way to dub over that. Surely it can't be hard.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Brilliant story ruined by bad narration
Revisado: 07-18-16
I don't know who is narrating but it isn't Dean Robertson, it's a woman. I listened to "Prodigal Summer" many years ago and was transfixed by that book. I wish they had gotten someone who could have brought personality to each of the narrators of "Poisonwood Bible". I had to keep reminding myself who was talking because she makes no difference in her narration for each character.
I plan to buy the book and read it because I love Kinslover's prose. Just too bad it was ruined by this narrator.
