Bleak. Very bleak.

I can’t say I enjoyed this very much, but the story moves along. It is extremely sad and at some points hopeless ... but the depictions of Russia were beautiful and BLEAK. I was most interested in the relationship between the brothers which is the crux of the novel - the mystery part was obvious (who killed the town girls). If you are up for a very depressing listen, then this is your book. Not a lot new here.

Rukhsana is a great role model and she is so brave. Throughout the whole book, the text made me feel as if I was right there in the story. This is such an amazing book. I loved how there were many different characters, but the author went into detail about each and every one of them so it wasn’t hard to keep track of them. For younger listeners be aware, for there is some bad language and slightly (not really though) explicit descriptions.

Thoroughly enjoyable audiobook

Apart from the mispronounciation of a neighborhood in San Francisco, this book’s narration is wonderful! 😄 McCauley continues his literary tradition of being like a wise, witty and empathetic friend. I enjoyed everything about this novel, and was melancholy when it ended.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator is so hyper and overly enthusiastic - one can hardly describe this as a soothing bedtime experience for a child OR an adult

Would you ever listen to anything by Hans Christian and Beatrix Potter again?

Yes, if the narrator had a bedtime story voice

Bedtime stories should be calming for children, not wind them up
