Historia
In the drought-ridden spring of 1934, Bena Jonnsen, her husband Ted, and their newborn baby relocate from their home in Minnesota to Pueblo, a Western plains town plagued by suffocating dust storms and equally suffocating social structures. Little can thrive in this bleak environment, neither Bena and Ted's marriage nor the baby, whom Bena believes - despite her husband's constant assurances - is slipping away from her.

Mesmerizing. I couldn’t put it down!
Revisado: 01-13-25
I’m a Colorado native, so was first interested in The Mineral Palace for its take on and information about 1930’s Pueblo. The author portrays social mores , “high society “ and day to day life in an intriguing way. She made me feel the fear and gritty blindness of a sandstorm, the boredom of wealthy wives who invented Good Deeds to make themselves feel busy. But the most gripping moments were when the egotistical, thoughtless treatment of women by “their” men revealed the misery and ruin that their actions brought down upon their victims.
This ends up being a beautifully written story about Death being the best solution to constant betrayal and lies. It’s pretty depressing.

Historia
In this new anthology, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. Trigger Warning includes previously published pieces of short fiction--stories, verse, and a very special Doctor Who story that was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the beloved series in 2013--as well as "Black Dog", a new tale that revisits the world of American Gods, exclusive to this collection.

I always find Neil Gaiman compelling and usually fascinating, but many of these stories didn’t wrap up as well as I thought they would. Some were not even surprising. But Gaiman was born to entertain

More!
Revisado: 10-15-22
Block and Singerman are perfect for each other. Singerman seems to tease the innocence of these weird, murky fairy tales to the surface. We know that Something lurks but there are threads of sweetness in the voice telling the stories and we're drawn into someone else's world. I was fascinated and entertained by each story, especially the endings.

Early Willis Reveals How Far She's Come
Revisado: 06-22-22
I almost tore my hair out during the first couple if chapters because it seemed that every other sentence had "...she thought" at the end of it. When I discovered that Connie Willis had written this book more than 20 years ago and wasn't as skilled as she has come to be, I was happy to proceed more forgivingly. Passages' subject, Near Death Experiences, wasn't as dusty now as one might suspect, but was fresh and intriguing. The historical accuracy is stunning and I suspect that Willis has as much fun with her research as she does telling good stories.

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work?

Disappointed
Revisado: 03-05-22
The narrator was pretty much the only thing that gave the characters depth. The story line was profoundly predictable, although Marconi and his "wireless " were interesting.

Historia
Sonchai Jitpleecheep, the devout Buddhist Royal Thai Police detective who led us through the best sellers Bangkok 8 and Bangkok Tattoo, returns in this blistering novel. Sonchai has seen virtually everything on his beat in Bangkok's District 8, but nothing like the snuff film he's just been sent anonymously. Furiously fast-paced and laced through with an erotic ghost story that gives a new dark twist to the life of our hero, Bangkok Haunts more than lives up to the smart and darkly funny originality of its predecessors.

"Haunted" is a better title
Revisado: 06-12-21
As always, Burdett's prose landed me in Bangkok and immersed me in his Thai world so that I could almost smell it. But each character is "haunted" by something so big that it bleeds into every aspect of their lives. it's not tangible, but all of the analysis and philosophical discussion of their actions, based on what haunts them, gets tedious. The story seemed to wander.

So Very Entertaining, As Always
Revisado: 03-05-21
I needed some riveting, Roller Coaster Ride listening to distract me and this fantasy pulled me right in to Under London. The characters fascinate, the story(s) invite speculation. I hope N.G. is unable to keep the next Events in the lives of Neverworld's citizens in his head and shares them soon.
