A beautiful story
Revisado: 10-15-23
Lyrical, Patchett weaves a story of hope, Youth, alcoholism and loyalty. At some point, we all have to make a choice of turning away from something as we turn toward something. Patchett has written a story that subtly illustrates this quandary. Laura repeating her mistakes with Pete, despite her knowledge of Pete’s limitations is path most have walked down. Streep was the perfect person to narrate the story.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

A good read
Revisado: 12-18-22
I had no foreknowledge of the story when I chose this book. And labeling the story as a “good read” is like calling the Dubai, Burj Khlifa a “tall building”.
As the authors had hoped, the story is compelling and seamless in its flow despite two authors. I never saw the twists coming, my ears delighted in the rhythm, tone of the narrators. I was moved, embraced, and lifted up by the words, sentences, structure of the book.

Before purchasing the book, I read a review that essentially said the narrator was a snooze. I thought, but it’s Tom Hanks! Doesn’t matter what the narrator sounds like. I was wrong: t to

Better to read than to listen to this book
Revisado: 09-11-19
In the first half of the book, there were many recordings of Ruth Ginsberg interacting with her students in a class. Unfortunately, there was an annoying echo that the recording picked up which was distracting and made it difficult to understand what she was saying. Other parts of the book, when Ginsburg is narrating, her voice is soft and though you can hear what she is saying, I felt I had to strain the entire time - until I gave up about halfway through.
