Historia
St. Elizabeth’s, a home for unwed mothers in Habit, Kentucky, usually harbors its residents for only a little while. Not so Rose Clinton, a beautiful, mysterious woman who comes to the home pregnant but not unwed, and stays. She plans to give up her child, thinking she cannot be the mother it needs. But when Cecilia is born, Rose makes a place for herself and her daughter amid St. Elizabeth’s extended family of nuns and an ever-changing collection of pregnant teenage girls.

Sad to say- but BORING
Revisado: 05-06-23
The story is far too drawn out, and never finds a satisfying end. I used to love Ann Patchetts work. The Magicians Assistant and State of Wonder are two of the best books I’ve ever read. But oh my God this one and Commonwealth are so flat it makes me wonder if the same person wrote all four. This could* have been great. The characters are all aching to be fully interesting but it never happens. Even in the last chapter, just when you think investing 11 hours of your time has been worth it… nada. Hard pass. I do think the narrator was good though. So hat tip there.

The written version is likely better
Revisado: 09-15-20
Though this book is geared towards a younger audience (late 20s or so), the author does have a few good points. I’ll be interested to see how she grows in her thinking in the coming decade.
However... her reading is painful. I honestly couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters because her cadence is SO exaggerated. It’s distracting and unnecessary; that hyper-feminized, sing-song style of reading is completely unnatural and unnecessary, making the points seem silly and saccharine. Honestly the producers should have corrected this before publication.

So irritating
Revisado: 12-28-18
The narrators voice is so condescending it ruined the book. Maybe the story was good... I couldn’t tell as I was totally distracted by the fact that I wanted to punch the narrator in the face by chapter 2.
