Not just another Stephanie Plum!

Where does The Heist rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Trying to rank a single book among all the audiobooks I've listened to so far is like trying to rank one food among all the food I've ever tasted,,,, It just depends on what you are in the mood for at any given time. This was a good one..Let's call it a great steak dinner!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot had enough twists and turns to keep my interest. Just when I was sitting back with a sigh and thinking it was all going well, some new apparent disaster loomed on the horizon to foil the plans of our heroes. Love the characters. I bought "The Heist" half fearing it would just be a slight twist on the Stephanie Plum books (don't get me wrong, I love Stephanie, Joe and Ranger... but was hoping for something a bit different) but Kate is not just another Stephanie Plum.. she's good at what she does! Nicolas is an excellent foil for her hardnosed sense of legal and moral ethics,, and his talent for the big con are amazing! There are enough hints of humor and slightly whacky characters to carry on the Evanovich tradition, but co-author Goldberg apparently has toned down the sometimes almost slapstick action and this is an excellent series on its own...worth a listen even if you are not a Plum fan!.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Scott Brick narrates in his usual excellent fashion.. the narrator is a large part of the enjoyment of an audiobook, and Brick never disappoints.

What disappointed you about Ghost of a Dream?

It was the only time I have ever applied the word "boring" to one of Green's books. The dialog was repetetive, the story seemed rather dull compared to some of his other works, and I just couldn't get into it. The narrator was good, I enjoy the accents of the characters... but in this book that was about the only thing I enjoyed. I quickly tired of the heavy footsteps with nobody there and the people who turned out to be ghosts much to the surprise of the ghostfinder team (I wasn't a bit surprised).

What could Simon R. Green have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I don't know what would have improved the book for me... It just wasn't to my taste. I think I'll stick to other series by this author, as this is the second book of this series that has let me down in my expectations of his works. I tried this one as a "second chance" for the series... back to Eddie Drood and the infamous wild witch of the forest for me!

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed listening to this very much... but could not give it 5 stars overall because I was looking for something that I could read along with if I wanted to.. and while it follows the story, the wording is entirely different from the NKJV. A very enjoyable production, but if you are looking for NKJV text, look elsewhere.

Would you ever listen to anything by Simon R. Green again?

Yes, I have enjoyed his Secret Histories series featuring Eddie Drood and his golden armor very much.

Any additional comments?

Just a little too far out there even for a Green fan...I tried, but just couldn't get into the whole story line.. gave up about an hour in. Disappointing, but even Simon R Green can't bat 1000 for everyone!

Would you try another book from Simon R. Green and/or John Keating?

I have enjoyed a number of Simon R Green's books, and John Keating's performance perfectly fits the tongue-in-cheek characters of Green's fiction.

What does John Keating bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His renderings of the voices are perfect for the characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no

Any additional comments?

I loved Blue Moon Rising, and looked forward to this sequel... to be rather disappointed. Got off to a great start in the initial chapters, but soon became rather abstract and philosophical and even boring in spots. Wondering "whodunit" kept me listening, and the suspense on that was worth the wait, but overall I can't say this was a good book beginning to end.

The First Confessor Audiolibro Por Terry Goodkind arte de portada

Good story, narrator not so much

Where does The First Confessor rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Hard to rank one among many, but this is probably in the top 25%. If you've listened to Wizard's First Rule, you'll love the background on the confessors.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Magda, as the lead, overshadowed the others.. due to the story line, the others were basically "supporting actors". Showed initiative and courage in the face of dangerous situations, a good strong female lead.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I found it distracting that the narrator seemed to put periods where there should have been commas, so to speak.. narrative seemed cut up and choppy in some areas, and I had to stop to think about whether a phrase belonged at the end of the previous sentence or the beginning of the next, and sometimes it made quite a difference in the meaning. Also felt the variations between characters was sometimes not consistent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Any additional comments?

While the story was great and made up for a lot, I actually found much of the dialogue to be repetitive and to some extent redundant. How many times is it necessary to say virtually the same thing in a conversation? Also there were several places where a sentence or phrase was repeated, as though the narrator started over at the beginning and re-read it... poor editing? But I still enjoyed it.. just too bad the performance didn't live up to the potential.

Where does Princeps' Fury rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book (and this series) is right up among the top picks of my audiobooks. Always an unexpected twist, drama and fantasy and a touch of romance (but not enough to make it a "chick book".)

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hard to pick one favorite character... several great characters emerge as the stories evolve and revolve around different ones.. as the series continues, Tavi (the main character in the first book) is still central, but "supporting roles" are brought to the forefront as the action progresses from Tavi's humble origins and not exactly glorious initial personality to his development as a military leader, almost by accident, and now the action is involving the entire land of Alera.

Any additional comments?

The series is excellent. I started it because of the author, but was surprised.. this is totally unlike Jim Butcher's Dresden series. Still a fantastic listen, though. The only negative thing I have to say about it is regarding the blare of tinny-sounding trumpets between sections. I guess they are supposed to be heraldic rather than musical instruments, but they are harsh and annoying and frankly I can't see any connection between them and the story or series. But even that can't detract from the quality of the story and performance as a whole
