No One Would Listen: A True Financial Thriller is exactly what the title promises. This is more than another book about the Bernie Madoff scandal, this is a fast-paced, blow-by-blow, true-crime story that you have to hear to believe. In a true David and Goliath tale, the underdog number cruncher uncovers the largest financial fraud in history, and has to fight everything and everyone in the system to bring it down.

Compelling story
Revisado: 11-04-21
This is a very compelling story which well repays a listen. The only caveat is that sometimes the author seems to be a little bit too paranoid. I can’t imagine anyone has ever needed to arm themselves and don a gas mask from fear of the SEC. However it’s the unique mind of the author that enabled him to spot the fraud and document it do clearly and it stands as a stark condemnation of the US Congress, particularly Republicans, deliberately underfunding regulators and then pointing the finger at them when crooks run rings round them.

The true story by the journalist who uncovered it
Revisado: 08-20-21
Julie Brown writes a compelling account of an incredible piece of investigative journalism which literally brought the story back from the dead.
Her dedication to this story and her courage brought down a network of incredible power which silenced journalists and prosecutors.
This book is brilliantly written and the narration by Julia Whelan is also superb.
This, and Death in Mudlick showcase the incredible talent among local journalists who can get stories no one else can get.

How I missed the biggest story ever
Revisado: 08-16-21
‘How I missed the biggest story ever and why my friend Ghislaine probably didn’t do it.’
Vicky Ward by her own account missed all kinds of red flags and you can see why. She still seems to have put together a story in which she is deeply sceptical of the prosecution of Maxwell. She relates how one of the Farmer sisters was sexually assaulted while holding Ghislaine’s hand but continued to be her friend socially even after Epstein was convicted and she knew therefore it was likely to be true. It “never occurred” to her to ask her friend about him.
Maybe it’s just me. Vicky Ward is an excellent writer and distinguished journalist but she seems to have been too close to this one.

Byzantium is too-often considered merely the "eastern rump" of the old Roman Empire, a curious and even unsettling mix of the classical and medieval. Yet it was, according to Professor Harl, "without a doubt the greatest state in Christendom through much of the Middle Ages," and well worth our attention as a way to widen our perspective on everything from the decline of imperial Rome to the rise of the Renaissance.

Historia
While many people have written books and novels on the Peninsular War, Thomas Flashman's memoirs offer a unique perspective. They include new accounts of famous battles, but also incredible incidents and characters almost forgotten by history. Flashman is revealed as the catalyst to one of the greatest royal scandals of the 19th century, which disgraced a prince and ultimately produced one of our greatest novelists.

Gripping

Absolutely gripping account of an incredible story - basically a company with two boxes of junk medical devices became worth $9bn while incredibly seasoned investors threw in their money and no one noticed.
Yet another corporate story of people just not asking the right questions and the use of powerful lawyers to shut up whistleblowers and sceptics. But a REALLY well told one.
