Historia
A sexually charged and wickedly funny thriller starring Tony Award-winning actor Billy Crudup, Harry Clarke is the story of a shy Midwestern man leading an outrageous double life as the titular cocky Londoner. Moving to New York City and presenting himself as an Englishman, he charms his way into a wealthy family's life as the seductive and precocious Harry, whose increasingly risky and dangerous behavior threatens to undo more than his persona.

What’s with the bad reviews?
Revisado: 01-30-25
Keep in mind that this is a recording of a one-man play, so the plot is compact and a little nutty, and it’s not for the sexually conservative or homophobic. Billy Crudup is amazing and when I listen to Harry Clarke I can even picture him onstage. It’s the kind of role only a first rate actor could do justice to, and I could kick myself for not seeing it in person when I had the opportunity.
I found the add on story about Lillian - another one-character play — performed by the (male) author quite charming. There’s not much action; it’s more like a conversation with a friend. I liked it enough to listen to it more than once.
If you like the intimacy of one character plays, or even just like listening to different British accents, definitely take a listen. And I am so grateful to Audible for preserving Harry Clarke for posterity!

The man he knew as "Control" is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the Circus. But George Smiley isn't quite ready for retirement-especially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence. Relying only on his wits and a small, loyal cadre, Smiley recognizes the hand of Karla - his Moscow Centre nemesis - and sets a trap to catch the traitor.

Fabulous. Poor George.
Revisado: 05-21-23
I’ve been listening to this over & over. Great multilevel plot (need to pay close attention) that is only made better by the perfect narrator. The only downside is that I listened to this audiobook BEFORE I watched the movie with Gary Oldman as George Smiley. If you plan on watching that movie, definitely watch it first. It’s supposedly very good, but pales besides this production,

Historia
In the era of Rembrandt, Rubens, and Van Dyke, Spain had its own great painter: Diego Velasquez. His assistant is an African slave, Juan, who, by helping his master in his studio in the preparation of paints and stretching of canvasses, becomes an artist himself. Self-taught by watching his master's technique, he is torn between the need to keep his secret, for such work as the creation of art is forbidden to slaves, and the desire to reveal his own talents.

Revisado: 03-28-22
A fictional biography of the man behind the famous Velazquez portrait. The performer is excellent, and, as the book is written in the first person, it really feels as though de Pareja is telling you the story of his unique and fascinating life. Though written for children/YA, it is an interesting, enjoyable, and non-taxing listen for adults! Good for a bedtime story.

Historia
Retired to the English countryside, an 89-year-old man, rumored to be a once-famous detective, is more concerned with his beekeeping than with his fellow man. Into his life wanders Linus Steinman, nine years old and mute, who has escaped from Nazi Germany with his sole companion: an African gray parrot. What is the meaning of the mysterious strings of German numbers the bird spews out-a top-secret SS code? The keys to a series of Swiss bank accounts? Or do they hold a significance both more prosaic and far more sinister?

So clever and well written.
Revisado: 02-17-22
Just fabulous. It’s also fairly short, though perfectly paced, so I keep listening to it over and over. The narrator is great, and .I really can’t imagine someone not liking this story. As another reviewer wrote, “Just listen to it and thank me later.” I’m glad I took his advice, and I do sincerely
thank him!

One man providing a little glimpse of life in his friendly, post-apocalyptic neighborhood. Bronson Pinchot is great as usual, and has the perfect voice for this narrator. I found it interesting and have listened to it numerous times, though I’m not sure what it all means. Maybe iDeath will be the final Apple product?

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Love this book and the narrator is perfect.
Revisado: 08-05-21
This is one of those books that I come back to time and time again. It is not your typical, dry history book. The author’s sarcastic tone and dark humor in delivering the facts, makes for entertaining (though oftentimes shocking) listening. And the narrator’s snarky tone could not be more perfect. Each chapter covers a different disease, so it’s almost like a book of short stories. Fascinating and informative, it is not however for anyone who cannot abide a little “black humor.” I can’t wait for this author’s next book.

Wonderful performances in a slightly different take on the vampire saga. It’s worth a listen just to enjoy the mellifluous voices of the two lead women! One of the better Audible Originals I’ve heard. You don’t need to be into vampire stories to enjoy this well-made production. Kudos for the haunting original music too.

Historia
Prince Stepan Kasatsky experiences a disappointment with his fiancé and decides to become a monk! There is a story line, but beneath it, Father Sergius struggles to find peace and, if not happiness, then at least contentment. But he is always disillusioned and ultimately unsatisfied. Only in the end does he find his way by letting go of what he struggled to attain all his life, i.e. to be better than everyone else in whatever he did, and settle for the mundane.

Fantastic! If you are Borges-curious, do it!
Revisado: 03-13-19
This is a great production. Perfect for an introduction to Borges. Guidall, the narrator, is excellent (as always). One of my best Audible purchases, I listen to it often. I just wish there was more Borges available in English on Audible. I agree, of course, that the unabridged collection would have been preferred, but this compilation is well worth a credit! Also, contrary to what another reviewer said, it DOES contain “The Garden of Forking Paths.” The story doesn’t have its own “chapter” on the audio book, but it comes right after the first (very short) story, “Borges and I.” “The Garden of Forking Paths” alone was worth a credit, since I’ve listened to it so many times!

Revisado: 03-09-19
I imagine this would be considered a “young adult” novel, which is certainly not my usual genre, as a 50 y.o. woman. However, the narrator was winning (with those adorable British accents) and the story interesting enough to keep even a jaded adult intrigued. Highly recommended for a light read.
