A Solid Mystery
Revisado: 05-07-23
This is a book about people of faith grieving the loss of a child. Regardless of one's religious beliefs, or lack of them, such a storyline must be regarded and respected.
The book is well written and offers an interesting format. The sense of time and place is engaging. The effects of a missing child on family, friends, and an entire community, is poignant and gripping. The childhood characters are fun and realistic. The friendships are sweet and impact the friends for a life, as all real friendships do.
I did not find this book preachy at all. It simply reflects how people of faith deal with loss and grief.
I mostly liked the performance. The narrator's style and voice suit the gravity of the story. The one complaint I have is that she mispronounces a couple of names several times, which is a small thing, unless it bugs the reader. In my case, it did.

Historia
In the title work in this collection of novellas, Poirot and Inspector Japp collaborate on the investigation of a suspicious suicide. The supernatural is said to play in the disappearance of top secret military plans in The Incredible Theft—an incredible claim, indeed, as Poirot will prove. The bullet that kills Gervase Chevenix-Gore shatters a mirror in Dead Man's Mirror—just the clue Poirot needs to solve the crime.

Don't fret over the narration of Nigel Hawthorne!

Hugh Fraser is to the rescue!
For some reason, the description of this title only includes Nigel Hawthorne as the narrator (who would have received one star as a narrator, mainly due to his poor reading of Poirot), but Hawthorne is only the narrator of the first story in this compilation. The wonderfully talented Hugh Fraser (Captain Hastings to the fans of the television series) narrates the other three stories. Hoorah for Hastings!

The Blue Castle
Revisado: 05-30-19
I read this book several years ago at the recommendation of a good friend. I was enchanted by it then, but this time, with the gentle, yet powerful reading of Barbara Barnes, I was captivated.
Captivated by L. M. Montgomery's lustrous descriptions of Mistawis and Valancy's "Blue Castle."
A love story of people and place, that has surely found and kept a place in my heart, as well as my bookshelf.
