I grew up in a rural community which didn’t emphasize the classics in our education. Given the opportunity to listen to War and Peace for free, I jumped at the opportunity, figuring I’d never have time to read the tome otherwise.

I listened to this audio book while doing mundane tasks at work when nobody else was around. It helped to pass the time and impressed a lot of customers who happened to come in while I was listening to it.

I have to say I don’t know why this book is a classic. It is a 17-volume monstrosity which really is not that interesting. It was not so much a novel as a vehicle by which Leo Tolstoy was able to get people to read his take on the history and politics of the Napoleonic Wars as well as his commentary on Russian society at the time. It also explores various religious and philosophical ideas prevalent throughout Europe in the early 1800s. The entire book 17 in particular is an incredibly tedious discussion of the philosophical background of various schools of thought behind the so-called “science” of history. The Jane Austinesque soap opera of various fictional characters throughout the other 16 books makes the rest of War and Peace palatable.

What made this Audible recording enjoyable was the masterful performance by the woman dramatically reading the book. Never could I have imagined one person could sound so convincingly and so distinctly like such a variety of characters of both genders from different countries and stations in society. She was brilliant! Because of her talents, this 60-hour audio book provided both entertainment and education during some solitary workdays at my job.

If you are required to read War and Peace for a class and don’t care to wear out your eyes reading, this may be a good option. If you’re interested in the Franco-Russo conflicts during the reigns of Napoleon and Alexander, you may enjoy it as well. Now that I know the full story, I think I would like to watch the movie starring Audrey Hepburn to see how well they were able to condense and dramatize the stories in War and Peace.

I love the stories about Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have read or listened to all I could get my hands on.

The people who produced this Audible book did a great job of staying true to Doyle’s original characters. The layers of action and the twists and turns in the plot of this mystery really kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had figured out who had kidnapped the queen and why, another possibility was presented.

The recording was well produced and of good quality. It was a bit challenging at times to figure out who was whom, but most of the voices of the main characters were distinct. My husband and I listened to this on a long road trip and it really helped us stay awake and pass the time.

If you enjoy a well plotted mystery and are a Sherlock Holmes fan, then I highly recommend this audiobook.

Joel 2:28 says that in the last days Yahweh is going to pour out His Spirit on all people so that many will prophesy. Pentecost was a mere downpayment on that word from the Lord (See Acts 2). We are entering into the last days, and more believers are receiving this gift of the Spirit. They need to understand what it’s all about and how to properly exercise the gift if prophecy. This book is truly a manual based on the Scriptures to help meet that need.

While the material is good, the narration leaves something to be desired. The man reading this book in the Audible version enunciates words very clearly. However, he repeatedly mispronounces several words, and reads with a nasally voice. His tone seems rather haughty, too, which is a big put off for me. I had to concentrate very hard to catch what was being said because of these distractions.

If you are an auditory learner and can get past the narration, this is a good book to listen to in order to understand the gift and office of prophecy and prophet. You may listen and take notes, as if you were following a sermon or taking a class, or you may listen while doing other things. If you learn better by reading, then you would be better off getting the book.

A friend introduced me to Cindy McGill through a link to an interview with her. Hearing her stories, I knew I had to get this book. I have listened to the audiobook twice now, and I know it’s something I will be listening to again and again.

Between the author’s great advice and her examples from personal experience reaching out to folks from diverse backgrounds, she equips believers in Jesus to share Christ using non-threatening language and creative “hooks” that draw them into life-changing encounters with God. She shows us how to think outside the evangelical box and utilize words and methods that appeal to those who’ve been alienated from traditional Christianity. She teaches us to see those outside the Christian faith not as “the lost,” but as friends of Jesus who’ve been seeking but just haven’t found Him yet.

If you desire to reach out to those outside the church, but don’t know how to go about doing so effectively, I highly recommend this resource. The narrator is fairly easy to understand and listen to. This audio book will give you the tools and confidence you need to demonstrate the love if Christ and be a conduit of the Holy Spirit to reach seekers all around you.

This was a riveting story! From the moment the main character was ejected from his damaged space ship until the mystery of the strange planet he landed on was revealed, I was hooked.

The entire story was told from the perspective of a teenaged boy homesick for earth and his friends, separated from his vagabond parents by an unexpected meteor storm. He faces unimaginable challenges on a strange planet filled with gigantic creatures and towering trees—some of which is covered with a black “blight.”

After his lifeboat is destroyed, Micah begins to worry that he’ll never be found. Uncertain whether his mom and dad are even alive, but hoping to be rescued, Micah travels for weeks across uncharted wilderness. He battles hunger, thirst, fatigue, hopelessness, loneliness and vicious creatures, hoping to reach a space probe his parents sent to the planet before the accident, so he can transmit a distress signal and get help.

He learns new skills and gains more confidence. Micah also deals with conflicts from the past. By the end of the story he has a greater respect for his parents and a greater understanding of himself.

The audio performance of this book was well done, with one young man convincingly providing the voices of several characters. The plot is unique and intriguing—had me guessing clear to the end. There were a few places it got a bit odd and a bit of language. But overall a very satisfying young adult sci-fi story fit for tweens on up!

Bizarre retelling of the legend of King Arthur

Since I first read about Arthur and the nights of the round table as an elementary student, I have been fascinated by this ancient legend. I’ve read Le Morte d’Arthur, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and other Arthurian lore. I enjoyed Camelot, the movie and various screen versions of the story. So I thought this might be an engaging version, as well.

However, unlike Sir Thomas Malory and other authors, the creator of this version seems more concerned with undermining readers’ respect for King Arthur and creating new heroes to substitute for him. Mr. Valentine also glorified the old gods of England and gave more credence to demonic powers than the Christian religion or the power of God’s Spirit.

While the recoded voices are distinct enough to tell them apart, there are long pauses between scenes and very little music to keep your attention. I listened while traveling with my spouse on a road trip. The complaint from my SO was that the story was “boring.” I found the ending terribly disappointing.

I am glad that this was available for free, as I’d have hated to have spent money or one of my credits to buy it.

This is an interesting story. There are only four speaking parts. You do not learn until the end of the story what the two sets of characters have to do with each other. However I did guess about halfway through part of the connection.

It was especially amusing to me how the writer of this science fiction story came up with alien curse words to substitute for common profanity. It’s also interesting how contemporary earth issues like immigrants, bio engineering, war, espionage, privacy and disease are contextualized in this sci-fi story.

Two of the characters are easy to distinguish. The other two are difficult to tell apart. You have to concentrate to follow it. However, it was entertaining and intriguing.

I got this audible book for free and thought it would be cool. It was not what I expected. There was a lot more language than I prefer. The book also contained quite a few “adult situations” which make it inappropriate for anyone under the age of 16.

The story was basically the musings of the main character over the loss of his mother, brother, wife and child. These were interjected between his frantic search for a missing infant whose drug addicted father had abandoned him after a car accident.

Well written as a short story with a reasonable resolution, this book could have been developed into a full length novel. It ends well, sort of. However, it was pretty depressing most of the way through. Not as bad as an Earnest Hemingway story, but not very happy either.

The recording itself was well done. The narrator had a pleasant voice and did a decent job of making the sounds of other characters differentiate from the main character.

The importance and operations of apostolic teams

I read and listened to a book on the apostolic anointing by this same author. When given the opportunity to listen to another of his books, I thought this one sounded interesting, since it had to do with God using ordinary people.

The content itself is really useful. It talks not only about apostles, but also prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers (as mentioned in Ephesians 4:11-16) and other supporting offices that make up what the author refers to as an apostolic team. He tells what they do, how they operate and what God requires of them to not only build the local church but enlarge the kingdom of God. He refers frequently to both Old and New Testament scriptures for concepts and examples of the principles he shared.

The narrator of this book makes it hard to take in what the author says. His voice is rather monotone and a bit nasally. My brain tended to want to tune out the voice, which made it hard to concentrate on the words. It would be better if someone with a more resonant voice were reading the book aloud, so it’s more pleasant to listen to.

If you are looking for a taste of how the Church can return to its intended modus operandi and can get past the narrator’s grating voice, then this is a fair resource. If you really want to get into the material, then an ebook or hard copy edition would probably be better.

Humanistic claptrap

I was assigned to read this book, but wasn’t excited because I knew it wasn’t Christian. I am really glad I chose to listen to it, rather than read it, because, as expected, it was a huge waste of time. At least by listening, I was able to get something else done. And the recording of this audio book was well done and held my attention.

This book consists of the story frame of a fellow talking to his friends about their lives and then telling them a story he says helped him a lot. He told them the story was short; that was a lie!

The second section is the story itself—an allegory of change, using cheese to represent what makes us happy and a maze to illustrate our search for “cheese.” Each character represents a different way people deal with change as our source of happiness is taken away by circumstances in our lives.

The problem with the author’s allegory of the four characters in the maze was that it left out an important element. Believers in Christ have a personal relationship with the Maze Master. We don’t have to waste time and energy wandering around trying to figure out where to find the “cheese.” We can ask. We don’t need to visualize ourselves finding and enjoying new cheese. We can be instructed by God’s word and inspired by His Spirit, so we have a better idea of what we’re looking for and how to find it. And fear is overcome by learning to trust the One who keeps moving the cheese for our own growth and development.

A better way of preparing folks to adapt to change is to read the Bible. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Reading the examples of men of faith, like Jacob, Joseph, Daniel and the Apostle Paul is a great choice, too.

So, if you want to listen to a humanistic way to navigate change by relying on your own limited knowledge and experience, then you will probably enjoy this book. But if you prefer to find a more effective way of adapting to what goes on around you, it’s better to develop a relationship with the One who controls the changes and can help you adapt in a way that He knows will be best and most effective for all the people touched by your decisions.
