Historia
In this collection of natural-history essays, biologist Joan Maloof embarks on a series of lively, fact-filled expeditions into forests of the eastern United States. Through Maloof's engaging, conversational style, each essay offers a lesson in stewardship as it explores the interwoven connections between a tree species and the animals and insects whose lives depend on it - and who, in turn, work to ensure the tree's survival.

This author has lots of good ideas, observations, and life stories. However the author is a little bit nutty, and unscrupulous, which is admitted to, and is also not a particularly great communicator, teacher, or networker. I found the book enjoyable, and ordinary.

Historia
In 2020, writer and campaigner Guy Shrubsole moved from London to Devon. As he explored the wooded valleys, rivers and tors of Dartmoor, Guy discovered a spectacular habitat that he had never encountered before: temperate rainforest. Entranced, he would spend the coming months investigating the history, ecology and distribution of rainforests across England, Wales and Scotland. Britain, Guy discovered, was once a rainforest nation. This is the story of a unique habitat that has been so ravaged, most people today don’t realise it exists.

Good content, but poorly represented
Revisado: 11-09-22
There is plenty of good content in this book, however it is riddled with inappropriate, off-topic, opinionated, preachy/cultish environmentalism. Author does not just present information, but attempts to shape your opinion.

Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter

Historia
In Eager, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America's lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried up, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today, a growing coalition of "Beaver Believers" recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier, for humans and non-humans alike, than those without them.

It’s ok
Revisado: 10-20-22
Author seems to have a certain lack of understanding about the history of the Yellowstone ecosystem. Specifically the wolves that were re-introduced we’re not the same as the wolves that had lived there previously, the wolves that had lived there previously were both smaller and less packed like, a large portion of their diet consisted of beaver. Another big piece that he is missing to this understanding is that the elk and bison do not behave as they once did. The bison are trapped where they would have otherwise have left for wintering grounds, which means considerably more overgrazing, and the elk have learned when hunting season is and where they are safe, as such they will also contribute to overgrazing. Are there are other such variables and factors which dramatically affect the ecosystem that while it seems like it cannot be restored it is not necessarily for the reasons you suppose. Still, this book covered a lot of interesting content and interesting perspectives and had some good information in there.

The average Joe
Revisado: 10-01-22
Well read, well written, and the content was excitingly average. There are a few small nuggets in there but overall I would say it’s a little bit like a forgettable TEDTalk… Pleasant enough but not something you would be inclined to go back and re-watch or listen to.

Revisado: 05-13-22
This book has good ideas that could be briefly explained…but it wouldn’t be a book, it would be little more than a pamphlet. It had the feel of an author who actually admitted to seeking ways to draw things out to appease a publisher…authors spirit wasn’t in the length, but it was in the message.

Historia
While everyone loves eating fresh garden produce, not everyone has the time and energy to create a productive garden. But what if growing delicious crops required hardly any effort? What if you could have succulent strawberries, perfect peas, and terrific tomatoes without needing to touch a spade, hoe, or plow - without needing to worry about irrigating, spraying, sowing a cover crop, weeding, cultivating, or building a compost pile? If that sounds good, the Stout System is the answer for you!

Historia
In The Marsh Builders, Sharon Levy delves into the intertwined histories of wetlands loss and water pollution. The book's springboard is the tale of a years-long citizen uprising in Humboldt County, California, which led to the creation of one of the first US wetlands designed to treat city sewage. The book explores the global roots of this local story: the cholera epidemics that plagued 19th-century Europe; the researchers who invented modern sewage treatment after bumbling across the insight that microbes break down pollutants in water; and more.

There’s less filth in a house of ill repute
Revisado: 05-13-22
This books primarily subject is the pre-history of marsh builders…sewage, drainage, waste management (or lack there of), ex…a worthy thing to know and understand…but the knowledge it gives on actual marsh building is disappointingly short. Also, the author undermines the book in places with political attacks on Washington, Nixon, Regan, and Trump all of which are completely unnecessary to the book, divisive, distracting, and frankly dishonest…I mean really, going after George Washington because he wasn’t thinking 300 years ahead of his time when he was already 200 years ahead, (he saw swamps as beautiful living things…not horrible diseased places according to the author). You can tell however the parts where intense political zeal taints perspective, and seeing as the book covers mostly a chronological history of scientific discoveries and infrastructure development…it doesn’t get in the way of a fair amount of worth while content. However, if your a lefty, you may approve. Reader did fine.

They destroy plant diseases. They break down toxins. They plough the earth. They transform forests. They’ve survived two mass extinctions, including the one that wiped out the dinosaur. Not bad for a creature that’s deaf, blind, and spineless. Who knew that earthworms were one of our planet’s most important caretakers? Or that Charles Darwin devoted his last years to studying their remarkable achievements?

Worms shall inherit the earth
Revisado: 07-25-21
Essential reading for any would be bookworm. Lots of good material in this book. Plenty of great material for teaching children as well. It was refreshingly free of politics, however there was abundant coverage fire mental aspects such as chemical fertilizers. In that regard the author seem to largely state the facts as we know them and keep her opinions to herself… She seem to present a fair and honest representation of information, managed to keep it interesting, sprinkled in some history, and they serve genuine passion for worms is evident. Good book.

Historia
There are redwoods in California that were ancient by the time Columbus first landed and pines still alive that germinated around the time humans invented writing. There are Douglas firs as tall as skyscrapers and a banyan tree in Calcutta as big as a football field. From the tallest to the smallest, trees inspire wonder in all of us, and in The Tree, Colin Tudge travels around the world - throughout the United States, the Costa Rican rain forest, Panama and Brazil, India, New Zealand, China, and most of Europe - bringing to life stories and facts about the trees around us.

Good enough to keep
Revisado: 07-24-21
There is good content in this book, however the author, like so many others, is a preachy left wing extremist, who hates capitalism , industrialism, personal property, who wants a New World order, and will happily take a book that is supposed to be about trees into Geo politics, stories of assassination, and all manner of political propaganda. Still, there was a lot of interesting material, and the annoying bits that the book really could have done without more or less made for a convenient commercial breaks… Otherwise just skip forward five minutes. I guess it’s to be expected… Authors are more often than not left-wing, teachers are also left-wing, anybody who focuses on nature tends to be left-wing, anyone who gets published tends to be left-wing, and clearly audible loves to favor anything left wing.

False advertisement
Revisado: 07-12-21
The primary focus of this book seems to be environmental extremist talking points 101… With a little Permaculture afterthought. I was perfectly willing to tolerate a little bit of the obligatory left-wing environmentalist BS, but after several chapters and even fast forwarding through other chapters I couldn’t find the end of the propaganda and the beginning of a meaningful conversation about what he continually promises that he will eventually teach you in this book.
