Matthew, We Hardly Knew Ye...
Revisado: 12-27-23
Not at all what I expected. It was much, much more. Unless one has had to endure an addiction in all its ugliness, it's hard to understand the vulnerability and the sheer gut courage it takes to turn your life inside out like this for everyone to see. And hopefully, to learn from, to help. It's what he wanted.
My compassion and empathy circuit had been broken badly, nothing beyond seeing a hurt or homeless dog really moved me anymore--until I listened to Mr. Perry's transparent honesty in this book. I found myself feeling his joys, his sorrows, his pain, laughing at his sardonic jokes...and wishing he'd had just a little while longer with us down here.
In the right hands (or ears), this book will help save lives. You did it, Matty. It's time to rest in peace in that golden Light you told us about now. You earned it, and you're definitely worth it.

Historia
Mike Rinder’s parents began taking him to their local Scientology center when he was five years old. After high school, he signed a billion-year contract and was admitted into Scientology’s elite inner circle, the Sea Organization. Brought to founder L. Ron Hubbard’s yacht and promised training in Hubbard’s most advanced techniques, Rinder was instead put to work swabbing the decks. Still, Rinder bought into the doctrine that his personal comfort was secondary to the higher purpose of Hubbard’s world-saving mission.

A Must-Read (Listen)
Revisado: 10-15-22
Whether you're morbidly interested in the sheer horrors of $cientology's inner workings and tactics of truly sadistic sociopaths, or just want to be awed by the unbelievable strength of Mr. Rinder as he overcomes the evils he was subjected to, this is an amazing book. Doesn't drag, never boring, difficult not to binge. (The one thought I kept having from midway on was wondering in all seriousness how that little runt still manages to be alive. *smh*)
Thank you for your courage, Mr. Rinder. Absolutely recommend!

Historia
On March 22nd, 2003, a highly intelligent, very successful couple decided to play a strange new game. The game was very involved, and required handcuffs and blindfolds and heavy chairs, but once they were in position, they got the hang of it quickly and thought it was actually pretty fun. But after playing for a little while, something very unexpected happened, and before either of them could comprehend it, a scream filled their apartment, then there was silence. (This story is a wild ride with one of the strangest conclusions we've covered on this show, so make sure you stick around to the ...

Historia
Behind the curtain of her happy on-screen persona, Valerie Bertinelli’s life has been no easy ride, especially when it comes to her own self-image and self-worth. She waged a war against herself for years, learning to equate her value to her appearance as a child star on One Day at a Time and punishing herself in order to fit into the unachievable Hollywood mold. She struggled to make her marriage to Eddie Van Halen—the true love of her life—work, despite all the rifts the rock-star lifestyle created between them.

Didn't Know I Needed This One
Revisado: 02-01-22
This was way, waaay more than I anticipated. Ms. Bertinelli's honesty, openness and willingness to share even the painful depths of her life grew riveting as her stories unfolded, then became a sucker punch to my soul, like a wake-up air horn at 3am. Her voice is soothing, sweet and her narration so natural, it almost seems like she's called you on the phone and you've put her on speaker. I laughed out loud more than once, as well as shed real tears in some places. What a truly moving book! That it is also sprinkled with her verbal recipes throughout is literally icing on this cake. Tuna Egg Salad is definitely a yum...maybe one day I'll even summon the chutzpah to try her late husband's favorite dish.
I came for a story but left with a soothed soul, a different life outlook, and an odd wistfulness that we're not actually acquainted in real life.
Well worth the read!

Rock and roll in the BC (Before Cooper) era was a tamer, milder world. In Who I Really Am, Cooper’s latest addition to Audible’s Words + Music series, we learn how the boa-wearing (not the feathered kind) maestro arrived at a show and sound - let’s call it AC for After Cooper - that has entertained millions of kids while terrifying parents in equal measure. Cooper drew inspiration from Saturday matinee horror movies, applied a "no such thing as too much" attitude, and hitched it to a kick-ass rock and roll band.

Brilliant Dose of Feelgood
Revisado: 10-28-21
Dear Alice: You know...I always liked you, sir. You were an integral part of my teenhood. After listening to this, though, now I can honestly say I love you with the kind of love reserved only for those who honestly deserve it. Thank you for the privilege of hearing about your journey, your victories, your joys, and for unashamedly speaking of your trials and failures. Above all, thank you for glorifying the One Who kept you protected and safe, and Who brought you the only helpmate capable of standing by your side throughout all this. Praising His name for never letting go!
Definitely an enjoyable listen! The bits of unplugged music were a real treat as well!

Thank You, Dr. Youn!
Revisado: 10-23-21
I've been a subscriber to Dr. Youn's YouTube channel for quite awhile and have always been both impressed as well as entertained by his content. This book continues to showcase his many talents--but more importantly, his grasp of what being a doctor truly is. He's not afraid to show his humanness, and brings to light areas and difficulties a physician not only can experience but also must find ways to combat. His fearless, quiet but unwavering undercurrent of recognition of God instead of standing on that pedestal himself was so refreshing and such a joy to hear. I thoroughly enjoyed riding the roller coaster of his fight to attain true "doctorhood". The ups, the downs, the failures and victories were well told and gripping, my attention was rapt through nearly every chapter. I even consider becoming a patient of his myself!
I'm definitely looking forward to his "In Stitches" novel, hoping Audible adds it soon!

As Good As I Remembered
Revisado: 08-04-21
Always a favorite from his short story anthologies. Mr. King has scared me quite deliciously over the years; as he scares himself with his words, I am just a joyful eavesdropper. However, his short story collections are what I consistently reach for first. The "rereadability" of Skeleton Crew remains topnotch, but to now have it literally performed for me by recognizable actors, and one story by Mr. King himself..? Like finding a penny worth thousands of dollars in the pocket of a favorite old pair of jeans! The performance(s) by Michael C Hall is/are exceptional. Even the pickiest consumer should find one (or several) of Mr. King's creations to taste. Well worth the purchase!

Wildflower is a portrait of Drew's life in stories as she looks back on the adventures, challenges, and incredible experiences of her earlier years. It includes tales of living on her own at 14 (and how laundry may have saved her life), getting stuck in a gas station overhang on a cross-country road trip, saying good-bye to her father in a way only he could have understood, and many more adventures and lessons that have led her to the successful, happy, and healthy place she is today.

Hearing Ms Barrymore tell her own story, address rumors and give "her side of the story" on different tabloid-style publicity over the years was fascinating. She is a humorous, experienced and clearly passionate lady with the familial gift of storytelling, which comes across vibrantly in her narration.

Tim Curry's Spendid Mastery
Revisado: 12-22-20
I have read, heard and seen dozens of renditions of this classic in my life, but never, ever have I enjoyed the story as much as hearing the late Mr. Curry's performance. His vocal portrayal of the myriad of characters was spot-on, as well as the inflection he used in dialogues. I am so glad I took the chance to get this!
Thank you, Mr. Curry. You are, and will continue to be, sorely missed.
