Historia
Last summer, The New Yorker published chef Anthony Bourdain's shocking, "Don't Eat Before Reading This." Now, the author uses the same "take-no-prisoners" attitude in his deliciously funny and shockingly delectable audiobook, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike.

Awful voicing choices
Revisado: 07-24-23
I don’t know if it was the director or the voice actor that mad every character one-note and rushed every piece of dialogue, but I’ve never stopped an audiobook faster than this. I think it’s a voice actress from Skyrim, and she’s decent at the voices, but the only well-performed voice was Lorcan. Reading this is much more enjoyable than listening to it.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

True love
Revisado: 04-27-20
Holy crap, I love this book! I haven’t read a book and been so consumed in a decade! The last time I read this fast and this often was with McCarthy’s “The Road.” It’s unpredictable, it’s human, it’s resonating.
I love Patrick Rothfuss’s prose. For that alone I read it’s the protagonist was interesting, a prodigy in everything and yet still a lovable teenage fool. Kvothe charmed, made mistakes, was heroic, and yet he was still approachable.
Honestly, the thing I enjoyed most...second to the voice...was how stuff just did not go according to plan. It was very much suspenseful in reading to see how situations panned out. Once I saw that pattern I got hooked.
The only thing I didn’t like, and this is less than a tenth of my feelings on the book, is the setting: I like my fantasy to be very vanilla, and this had a little bit of anachronistic/steam-punk stuff in it. However, I did like how academics were a large part, and I mean aside from his university studies. The smackings of the Latin intellectualism were very much there.
The magic system makes a lot of sense. Very admirable, original, and believable.
It’s a long read, but it goes fast. I recommend this to anyone, novice or veteran in the fantasy field.

Way better than “Blood of Elves”
Revisado: 01-20-20
Man, I wish I started with this book instead of “BoE.” The show actually gets quite a bit accurate and only takes a few liberties.
I liked this story a helluva lot more because it actually features its titular character, unlike “BoE.” And there’s monster hunting in it, unlike “BoE.” Getting to know Geralt is fun. I enjoy his lessais fair personality because it makes for good conflict and tension. And learning how he starts his on-and-off relationship with Yennifer is fun.
Since these are more short stories than one grand plot, it’s difficult to say what I thought of the book as a whole, except that it’s fun.
The voice actor is great, and I wish that Henry Caville adopted his country accent.

Historia
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

Great dramatization of history
Revisado: 12-23-19
This is one of my favorite stories about the human spirit. However, since I can’t articulate why I first gave it 4 stars—it’s just short of that I feel—and it did give me a little tear jerk, 5 it is. I did think the choice for the voice actor of the commanding officer was odd because I wasn’t convinced that he was an alpha male like his dialogue portrayed. He sounded wimpy. Otherwise, great story.

Great for veterans
Revisado: 05-23-16
I effing love this book! It's way more than a Star Wars story; it's an infantryman's story. Being a soldier, I appreciate the perspective the author (who is obviously a veteran) brings to the this Universe.
I think with the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.lasting a decade and a half, many veteran and civilian readers want to be able to be able to understand it and identify with it in entertainment. This novel is a great way art imitating life, and of making the SW battles more real and consequential. It also makes the eponymous videogame more fun to play.
The plot, while taking place between and during the original trilogy, wasn't predictable, and the characters were flawed in a human and appreciatiable way. I think there was much in the audiobook that I missed, so I'm going to get the Kindle edition and re-read it. The dialogue made sense, and wasn't pretentious, like many fantasy books can have. It was more of a character study rather than an adventure book, and I liked that a lot.
Recently, I've understood that when you criticize art it has to be in the context of its genre, not what you want it to be. Yes, books in can overachieve and surpass their genre contemporaries and reveal something amazing about the human experience, a la, "The Fault In Our Stars," but one shouldn't judge a book for not being life changing. Before I would give this a 3.5 but now I give it a 5 for doing what it does within, and for, the SW genre.

F***ing drivel!
Revisado: 07-10-15
Holy crap, this book is awful! One chapter in and I was astounded at the anachronisms! A third way through and the soft core porn is too much to handle! This is a prime example of why self-publishing is never a good option. As an editor, my eyes rolled back in my head every time I read. The characters are thin, the motivations are shallow, and the plot predicable (some say that there's a twist at the end, but I can't justify finishing it). The author has done a cursory amount of historical research, but in that way talks down to his audience (possibly because much shouldn't be expected from readers of pirate romance [which I must disclose that I didn't know I was reading such]). Yet, because he's done that much you'd expect him to forgo such things as an eighteenth century lady sunbathing, or racial inequality on a pirate ship (pirates were known for their egalitarianism and republican governance).
It's possible that I am an outsider to the genre being to harsh, and shouldn't poo-poo on what I don't know. Then again, should pirate romance be considered literature?
