A winter sunrise over the great plains of Russia is no cause for celebration. The temperature barely rises above zero, and the guards at Penal Colony IK22 are determined to take their misery out on the prisoners—chief among them, one Zoya Zakharova. Once a master spy for Russian foreign intelligence, then the partner and lover of the Gray Man, she has information the Kremlin wants, and they don't care what they have to do to get it.

Better late than never
Revisado: 03-31-25
I was annoyed that the audiobook was delayed by a month and intended to rate it lower as such. However this book was a new high bar for both the author and the narrator and I couldn't give this any less than it deserved. though I would love a spin off series following the adventures of Hightower now.

Historia
It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on. I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.

6 stars.
Revisado: 11-26-24
I'd give the narration and writing 6 stars if possible. it's short, sweet, and we'll balanced. This will be on my relisten list for awhile.

Fairly disappointing
Revisado: 09-11-24
The story just doesn't hold up as compared to the last ones. The stakes aren't there and it feels like the whole book is just a contrived way to shift the paradim for the next books. Maybe wait to pick this one up.

Fantastic Narration, Overhyped writing
Revisado: 02-25-21
The narrator knocks this book out of the park, and it almost justifies giving it a listen. But I'm nearly through the first book, and the only major plot twists are laughably predictable. The side characters read like a call of duty script. While the main character is a great discussion on veteran suicide, it doesn't rectify the fact that the author never explains why they are fighting "the bad guys."
Honestly, this book is what a thriller would be written from the antagonists perspective. Especially if the antagonist doesn't know the protagonist is coming.

Historia
Dunbar-Ortiz adroitly challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows how policy against the Indigenous peoples was colonialist and designed to seize the territories of the original inhabitants, displacing or eliminating them. And as Dunbar-Ortiz reveals, this policy was praised in popular culture, through writers like James Fenimore Cooper and Walt Whitman, and in the highest offices of government and the military.

Messy, with truth and opinion interwoven
Revisado: 12-05-19
As a trained historian looking to branch out into new field I picked this book up to listen to driving over the holidays, but the inconsistencies were enough to drive me insane. This is not a history of native peoples of the us, as the main talking points of the author seem to drift to the middle east more often than not, where the author often embellished facts with purposefully little clarification to purposely push their own narrative of the US military today. When sticking to their own field of study, the author did a very good job of making concise points that challenged my own viewpoints on many things, but this wonderful part of the book was overshadowed by a bias so prevalent I thought I was listening to cable news. I suggest picking up this book, but ultimately fact checking anything it states after the 1970's.

Historia
An Atlanta ex-cop comes to Lake Sackett, Georgia, seeking peace and quiet - but he hasn’t bargained on falling for Frankie, the cutest coroner he’s ever met. Frankie McCready talks to dead people. Not like a ghost whisperer or anything - but it seems rude to embalm them and not say hello. Fortunately, at the McCready Family Funeral Home & Bait Shop, Frankie’s eccentricities fit right in. Lake Sackett’s embalmer and county coroner, Frankie’s goth styling and passion for nerd culture mean she’s not your typical Southern girl, but the McCreadys are hardly your typical Southern family.

series review
Revisado: 08-21-18
This entire series is masterfully told with a cast of characters that all seem relatable. While i was disappointed in the story being split up in the last two books, for the quality of the overall world created in the series, it is absoloutely worth it.
