Still loving this series! Now we get to deal with Lila’s sister Maddie, who we last saw screaming and throwing things while her sister was abducted. She’s so aggressively brash and forward that she’s an absolute pleasure to hear. More fun characters and more steamy lovemaking - worth every minute!

Ruby writes another great romance where past difficulties for both partners are solved through patience and love of the other. Harrec is hilarious, Kate is adorable, and they play off each other do well. Something I have always loved about Ruby Dixon is how she knows how to do a slow boil. We get plenty of time to get to know our heroes, hearing their thoughts and feelings, well before any hanky-panky. And again, props to Hollie Jackson and Mason Lloyd for being such talented voice actors!

Jason is not the same heartbroken man who left Earth. Book 4 begins with his arrival back home and leads you his uncertain reunion with his family. Shirtaloon takes time away from his usual madcap fantasy adventures and explores the question: “Who is the stranger who returned from that other world?” Journeys change you, for good and for ill, and Jason Asano is no exception. An excellent listen.

Faction Wars has been referenced numerous times in the previous books, and we finally arrive. It is not easy to review the book without spoilers, but I can try. In the words of Carl, “We gain things, and we lose things.” And in war, that is always true. Friends are lost and gained, and hard choices must be made in the interest of survival. More lore about the outer world is introduced and I’m not sure if the AI is becoming more or less insane. Certainly just as dangerous. An excellent book in the series, and I highly recommend it if you’ve enjoyed the rest of the series!

One of the things I love about Rudy Dixon’s style is her talent for giving each of her characters a unique inner voice. I get to see not just how they act, but why. This was especially important for this book as we meet Lila, an abduction victim who has a unique way of communicating. The challenges this creates adds a lot to the story, showcasing the joy that comes when someone learns to speak your language, not from obligation but from an earnest desire to communicate the way you do. It’s sappy, it’s romantic, it’s sexy as hell: it’s a Ruby Dixon novel!

Another fine addition to the IPB series by Ruby Dixon. Josie is definitely not down for a Resonance with Haeden, but the khui knows better. Mixed signals, miscommunication, and sensitive egos make for a frustrating journey of discovery.

Pros:
- Lots of time spent getting to know Josie and Haeden: their thoughts and feelings are made clear but without resorting too much to exposition.
- Extremely erotic descriptions, plenty of foreplay, and a great example of how communication and consent is incredibly sexy.
- More Not-Hoth discoveries and additional lore about the planet.
- Holly Jackson snd Mason Loyd are fantastic as always and give an earnest sincerity to the book.

Cons:
- A new creature shows up, but the description seems a little rushed. Each encounter should give more detail to help the reader’s imagination.
- The ending likewise seemed a little rushed. It ended at a good place with teases for the next book, but I feel that more could have been done. Perhaps an epilogue from a third perspective?

Definitely another fun listen. The adventure heads out into wilder realms and Jason is, as always, lovable defiance and irreverence. Just a pleasure to follow his journey in this crazy magical world. We also have a great cast of voices courtesy of Heath Miller. To be honest, much of my enjoyment of a good story is a good narrator. The story is good, but Heath Miller makes it a must-listen. While he covers a wide range of voices, his generic American accent is hilariously bad, which I love. His Texas accent is actually pretty good, though, which surprised me.

If you enjoyed Jason in book one, you’ll love him here, too. Shirtaloon has definitely improved as we get a wider cast and Jason comes further into his abilities. Looking forward to the next book!

Amnesia makes for bland characters

I have read other works by Matt Dinniman, specifically the Dungeon Crawler Carl (DCC) series, and this is nowhere near what I’ve come to expect. Jonah, Gretchen, and Poppy start off with great potential as characters, but by Chapter 15, I’ve learned almost nothing about them. A ticking clock is introduced way too early, pushing the narrative forward while sacrificing character development.
Matt’s DCC series, has a ticking clock introduced early, too, but is slow enough that Matt can stop and explore character motivations and relationships. Amnesia is not a plot point in DCC, allowing Matt to explore how each character’s past influences their decisions. Dominion of Blades is well-written as far as descriptions and dialogue, but falls down on plot and character development. DCC is a far better series that I am avidly following through six books. I stopped listening partway through the first book of this series.

Yet another isekai-style story, but has enough moving parts to keep it interesting. I was unsure if I would enjoy it at the outset, but over time the writing improved, the characters became more fleshed out, and there were some unique twists and turns towards the latter half of the book. Once politics became a factor in decision making, the book hits its stride and is a great listen. I recommend it, but be aware that the story does take a little bit to start getting good.
