This is a book in need of an editor. McCullough goes on and on about boring details of domestic life, apparently because the letters he relies on cover dull topics. But he says relatively very little about someone like Mary Cassatt, a great talent, apparently because he doesn’t have her letters. The section on John Singer Sargent is good. He should have written more about the literature of the period and the ideas and changing morals and politics. Not worth the time to read unfortunately.

Beautiful version. Hemingway’s sparsely poetic language dignifies the characters. I love the melding of Spanish and English and the use of thee and thou.

Well organized and the right level of detail. Highly recommend. If I had one criticism it’s that the authors are sometimes snarky in their criticism of others for being overly invested in their theories, which made me think that the authors were also overly invested in their own conclusion that HRT is safe no matter what a particular study found. They criticize data mining, for example, then they turn around and data-mine to find reasons to dismiss the trials that showed a link between HRT and breast cancer.

I didn’t want this to end. The depressing parts are tough, you care so much about the characters, but you just have to trust it.

I love Patti Smith! I want to read everything she’s read. I started with Just Kids, then wanted more so I bought Horses and M Train. What an amazing observer. She thinks and dreams in poetry. I feel I’ve learned a secret - that pursuing art for its own sake gives the artist a beautiful mind. We are so fortunate that she has chosen to reveal her mind to us. I listened one notch slower so I could digest the imagery better. Now I’m exploring other writers she discusses, such as W.G. Sebald and Gregory Corso. Thank you, Patti Smith. I wasn’t able to relate to you in the 1970s, but so happy to follow you now!

I loved the characters, the writing and the historical catholic elements. The author describes the influences on the characters so thoroughly and lovingly that every choice seems inevitable. A truly beautiful book. Like if Dickens were an Italian catholic.

Listened in preparation for a vacation in Edinburgh to learn about John Knox and the reformation. I loved hearing actual Calvinist/reformist sermons in historic context. Narrator is endearing as is the adventure story line. Puts the reader in the middle of the action, and you realize how necessary Protestant reform was. Makes me appreciate my Presbyterian ancestors and want to learn more, especially about predestination and why that was such a focus. I’m grateful for having discovered this wonderful book.

I loved this new translation. Concise, poetic, sparse but vivid. Unfortunately the reader is distractingly annoying. She overemphasizes the meter and for some strange reason emphasizes the words he and she whenever they come up. They should reissue it with a trained actor as reader, because the translation deserves a top notch audio version with a natural cadence.

Lovely combination of science and story. Gently read by the author, who clearly cherishes the gentle souls of her characters, human or animal, alive or departed.
