Loved listening to this audiobook! Great story, excellently narrated. I just felt everything wrapped up a little too quickly.

This book has been on my to-read a long time and when it came up on an Audible sale I snapped it up. Really incredible facts about blood shared and good stories of patient issues. Sometimes it felt a little heavy handed with politics, but a good overview of the market of blood products. Narrator has a lovely voice. However, there were some odd editing and directorial issues with this book. First, she seems to give every quote a character voice sometimes with an accent - I find this unusual in nonfiction. She frequently narrated “the Who” for the World Health Organization which is usually called “the W-H-O” - maybe this is a British English thing? Finally, the audio editing was frequently clipped - breaths entirely removed and even words cut short.

Wish I’d known earlier

I worked as a pharmacist for a dozen years and I wish I'd known this earlier... it certainly explains why some generics just didn’t have the therapeutic effect of others.
Investigative journalist Katherine Eban wrote a compelling story all about the whistle-blower that exposed the conditions in non-US generic drug manufacturing. A few quotes that are ingrained in my mind: "elaborate fraud, extreme hazard and filth" and "making third-world drugs and selling them at first-world prices". Eye opening to what happens within regulatory agencies and how little can be done when the companies are not on Us soil.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. While obviously the topic expert, she did seem to be reading the text rather than telling the story. Sentence inflection was odd at times and some medications were not pronounced correctly. The one word that really bothered me was “debacle”. She used a non-standard pronunciation (deb-uh-kull rather than DE-bach-ull).

Black Cake is a story of multiple generations on multiple continents each struggling with personal challenges. Sometimes the challenges are common to their race or gender, sometimes they are the result of grievances against them personally. An engrossing tale, well written. Performance by narrator was impressive. She has an incredible availing for voices and accents. At times her choice of emphasis was different than how I would have said something.

This has been a great series to listen to with my game-loving teenage sons and husband. Characters are well developed. Story is interesting. We appreciate the interplay between this series and Arcane Ascension series. Looking forward to more of Andrew Rowe’s writing performed by Nick Podehl.

Well, it wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for. It was definitely about dogs, and the walkers and the business which is what was described. I guess I was hoping for more frivolity. But it was a memoir, not a comedy.

This set of tracks reminded me of being at a massage therapy appointment which is always relaxing and soothing and I never fail to fall asleep on the table and awake drooling with embarrassment. As required by ACX Audible, there is silence between tracks and while minimal (about 2 seconds) it is an abrupt transition. The only narration is opening and closing credits and therefore no story to assess, which is the point of the production. Since I personally do not normally have trouble falling asleep, I will use this audio as meditative background sounds. Review in exchange for a promotional credit.

I am a big Sanderson fan. I’ve read most of his work. As a family we read through the Alcatraz series and really enjoyed that. I’ve been looking for the ‘next’ Sanderson book to get my boys into and this is IT! At 10 and 12 they are too young for the Reckoner series but since we read aloud we can talk through the concepts in this book and any questions they might have.
The story is gripping and filled with great characters along with a plot that does a few ‘star fighter’ maneuvers of its own. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to reread it with my family!

All the pieces come together in the Hero of Ages. Things hinted at in the first and second book come to a satisfying end. I am impressed with Sanderson's ability to reveal bit by bit all the things you were questioning and he does it in a way that does not feel rushed. This was a great series!
