Historia
Sanna is a mermaid - but she is only half seavish. The night of her birth, a sea-witch cast a spell that made Sanna’s people, including her landish mother, forget how and where she was born. Now Sanna is sixteen and an outsider in the seavish matriarchy, and she is determined to find her mother and learn who she is. She apprentices herself to the witch to learn the magic of making and unmaking, and with a new pair of legs and a quest to complete for her teacher, she follows a clue that leads her ashore on the Thirty-Seven Dark Islands.

the plot was so blah and not well executed. The voice actresses did a good job but the story itself was not good

Fantastically written, thought-provoking
Revisado: 09-15-23
I am so impressed by this book. The topic could not have been more thought-provoking. The characters were full and grew throughout the book. It was funny and sad and hopeful. The author did an incredible job of looping so many people together. I'd even read this again.

Meh with a twist
Revisado: 07-21-23
3.5 stars from me. I thought it was interesting to see a WWII historical fiction with a main character who is Jewish but in Shanghai. The writer has almost a lyrical style which is enjoyable to listen to. The plot was just kind of meh and the twist came too late.

Important history, maybe not told the best way
Revisado: 05-26-23
I really did not care for the voice performer so I'm not entirely sure my rating is based on that or if the way this story was told was a bit lacking.
Obviously every survivors story of the Holocaust is important and serves a needed purpose of education and remembrance. In this case, I felt the author put too much effort in detailing more unnecessary parts of the story rather than the parts that would actually paint a strong picture in the readers mind.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Emotionally Confusing but Undeniably Good
Revisado: 01-16-23
I'm still trying to process how I feel about this book. It wasn't until almost halfway through the book that I became truly invested and saw the prose as beautiful. I've never been a gamer, so I feel like I missed just a little bit of the substance. As for the overarching themes; well, it was beautiful and frustrating at the same time.
The voice acting was amazing!

Fine retelling from villan standpoint
Revisado: 12-04-22
This retelling of Cinderella gives the back story of Agnes, the "evil stepmother". There is no magic, only tragedy and honesty. I really liked how many of the original sins of Agnes are addressed and how it all plays out. It wasn't the best book I've ever read, but it was definitely enjoyable and I'd recommend it. The voice actress was amazing!

Mostly Good Book
Revisado: 12-04-22
I'm a big fan of historical fiction and have read too many books in that genre to count. A Bend In The Stars doesn't make it into the top 15 I've read. It had all the components of a good read: a physicist brother racing Einstein to prove Relativity, an insecure yet brilliant woman surgeon with a loving yet slightly overbearing and secretive fiance, a badass grandmother, a handsome and emotionally steady soldier, a rich and crazy antagonist, a love triangle, death, and a fee escapes, all with some antisemitism and the beginning of WWII sprinkled in. Somehow the execution lacked and Mariam, the main female character, got incredibly annoying which pretty much ruined her for me. It was so anticlimactic.

Great performance, mediocre book
Revisado: 11-27-22
Not my favorite honestly. Really not about the whole demon thing. I felt Lara was a little one dimensional for all the talk about how she'd changed over the course of the book. The "mystery" of Esme's identity was well placed but ended anticlimacticly. The voice artist made the book better than it would have been had I just read it in my opinion.
