Historia
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Top Teir Writing and Performance
Revisado: 01-26-24
I put off reading this for a long time because I figured I knew what it was about, understood the just of it, read work inspired by it, and didn't need to read the original work. This is true for some older classics, especially in Sci-fi, but not here.
The quality and power of Bradbury's writing changes everything! and Tim Robbins delivers a true stand-out performance. Don't put this off, it's worth every second.

Historia
Halmey Dz and her partner, Connla Kurucz, are salvage operators, living just on the inside of the law...usually. Theirs is the perilous and marginal existence - with barely enough chance of striking it fantastically big - just once - to keep them coming back for more. They pilot their tiny ship into the scars left by unsuccessful White Transitions, searching for the relics of lost human and alien vessels. But when they make a shocking discovery about an alien species that has been long thought dead, it may tip the perilous peace mankind has found into full-out war.

A Perfect Far Future SF tale
Revisado: 09-15-22
After feeling that Becky Chambers' Space Adventure books felt a little too soft and shallow, this filled the void I didn't know existed. It's very philosophical, and perhaps too deep for audio - I had to back track quite often and listen at 1x so that I could follow along with the trains of thought - but listening to this was quite an experience.
Nevertheless, the concepts both personal and political were fantastically fleshed out: free will, identity, what a perfect society would be, how much government control is too much. All these concepts were pushed to the edge, but in a way that never felt preachy.
At the same time, the story was excellent and gripping. I never felt like I knew what would happen next, and the stakes kept growing in unpredictable ways. It really blew me away.
I'm a big SF fan and this is possibly my new favourite book. I've already bought the sequel (but as a physical book).

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Dated, but fun
Revisado: 06-15-21
When the internet was just starting to become a thing, no one knew quite what it would do to society. Stephenson took a guess, added some William Gibson and some humour and swords, and created a really fun story.
Stephenson books are tricky on audio because he adds a lot of details and multiple perspectives, including the perspective of a cyborg super-dog in this case, so while I usually listen to books a little sped up, I couldn't in this case. Also, the intermission between chapters is odd and feels a little racist, though it turns out it's just an approximation of what Sumerian would sound like, but all this meant I wasn't too thrilled with the audio.
But overall, it was a fun ride for sure!

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Beautiful tribute to Fantasy and Books

This is exactly what I needed during this pandemic. a truly escapist book full of wonder and beautiful places. It doesn't hold back on relevance to the present world but helps you find hope and courage in the face of it. This is a must read!

With Age of Myth, Age of Swords, and the New York Times best-selling Age of War, fantasy master Michael J. Sullivan riveted fans with a tale of unlikely heroes locked in a desperate battle to save humankind. After years of warfare, humanity has gained the upper hand and has pushed the Fhrey to the edge of their homeland, but no farther. Now comes the pivotal moment. Persephone’s plan to use the stalemate to seek peace is destroyed by an unexpected betrayal that threatens to hand victory to her enemy and leaves a loved one in peril.

Filler, No Thriller
Revisado: 10-21-19
The whole book is pretty much setting up the next part of the series. very little actually happens in this one which I find very upsetting.
I have always liked not loved this series, mostly because it is light on concept and originality, but heavy on cool characters and excitement. This one had little character development and practically no excitement, so it was a huge let down.
I don't think I'm going to keep reading this series because what seemed like a fresh pre-civilization concept is falling into an old trope about elves, men, dwarves, with some people who can do magic and they have wars. Been there done that, and if you're going to just stretch the crap out of the story so you can keep putting out books every year, I'm out.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Historia
A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood. The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them. James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone.

Historia
Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer; Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom; and Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over. The time of rebellion has begun.

Really Fun Fantasy
Revisado: 01-31-17
Primitive humans (~500AD European technology/societies) interact with God-like creatures and begin to realize their worth. Great characters and a classic story with fun twists that you wish you caught onto earlier. This is just so enjoyable for Fantasy fans! This is apparently a prequel series but no knowledge of Sullivan's original series is necessary. I can't wait for the next one!
