Historia
Lincoln is the cornerstone of Gore Vidal’s fictional American chronicle, which includes Burr; 1876; Washington, D.C.; Empire; and Hollywood. It opens early on a frozen winter morning in 1861, when President-elect Abraham Lincoln slips into Washington, flanked by two bodyguards. The future president is in disguise, for there is talk of a plot to murder him. During the next four years there will be numerous plots to murder this man who has sworn to unite a disintegrating nation.

Driven by the Fates - Tormented by the Furies
Revisado: 03-24-24
Vidal weaves a complex story of a man whose election divided a nation, who feels compelled to reunite it. Although the Civil War plays in the background, it is the domestic and court intrigue that dominates the story. Lincoln is shown as a shrewd politician, underestimated by his opponents, He is forced to deal with puerile and/or incompetent generals, corrupt, scheming members of his cabinet. Domestically he is a failure as a father, His spendthrift wife, is uncontrollable and struggles unsuccessfully with her inner demons. Through it all, Lincoln chooses Union as his loadstar, all else will be consigned to the fire. While his wife consults spiritualist to talk to the dead, Lincoln is tormented by the guilt and the blood of thousands of young men. He is convinced victory and reunification will be achieved; even if, it will mean his own destruction.

Historia
Leonard Dyke's writing style didn't offend. But all of his work featured unhappy endings: murders. When four people die, including the author, police finally call on Nero Wolfe. Wolfe baits a trap, and when it springs shut, he finds that truth is stranger (and bloodier) than fiction.

Three must die so vengeance can be served
Revisado: 09-03-23
The author, a reader at a publishing house and a typist all had to go! At least that is how our murderer saw it. But these deaths are just part of the prologue. For the murderer has an idée fixe and pawns must be sacrificed from time to time. This book is well crafted. For the reader, the mystery is not who the killer is, but how Mr. Wolfe will trap the clever fiend. Mr. Wolfe gives away dozens of his dear orchids and even leaves his mansion so Archie can entertain and dine a group of ladies that know all the dirt.

The Self-made man, his wife and her step-son
Revisado: 07-19-23
For the third time, Ellery finds himself wrapped up in intrigue in the New England town of Wrightsville. Ellery had met Howard Von Horn years before in pre-War France. Now Howard begs Ellery to help him with his bouts of amnesia. Reluctantly, Ellery returns to Wrightsville. Here we meet Howard's rich, self-made father, a Renaissance man more demi-god than mortal. Howard's uncle is a cold calculating, miserly capitalist. His step-mother is young, elegant and beautiful. Ellery soon finds that Howard has not been completely truthful with him. There is a blackmailer bent on ruining the seemly peaceful tranquility of the Von Horn family. Ellery will find that he is being manipulated by several people acting in cross purposes.

Historia
French's department store was famous for the rare merchandise it offered its elite clientele. But no one there could be proud of its latest exclusive window display: the bloodstained corpse of the owner's wife. Ellery Queen and his father, Inspector Richard Queen, soon discover that this palace of commerce is a viper's nest of fear, jealousy, suspicion, and hatred, where love is cheap and the price of honor marked down. But worst of all is the mysterious mocking mastermind who is out to turn the glittering store into a bargain basement of murder.

Murder in the Department Store
Revisado: 07-15-23
This is my favorite EQ story.
The wife of a NY department store owner is found murdered with her body tucked away in a display window!
Husband, x-husband, children, step-children, smugglers, store employees, truck drivers and a French designer any of whom could have done the deed, but who did? You might figure out who did it, but it will probably take Ellery to tell you why.

Historia
Despite the dismal Broadway season, Gunplay continues to draw crowds. A gangland spectacle, it's packed to the gills with action, explosions, and gunfire. In fact, Gunplay is so loud that no one notices the killing of Monte Field. In a sold-out theater, Field is found dead partway through the second act, surrounded by empty seats. The police hold the crowd and call for the one man who can untangle this daring murder: Inspector Richard Queen.

Murder at the theatre
Revisado: 07-15-23
Well crafted plot and storyline keeps you guessing to the end. The prologue by "JJ McC" can be jettisoned as apocryphal as to the future Queen family. The book introduces the reader to Ellery, his father, inspector Richard Queen and to Sargent Thomas Velie. Deals with blackmailing shyster with a penchant for fedoras getting poisoned in a crowded theatre.
