Good Book
Revisado: 04-12-25
This must be an AI generated voice reading. I lead with that because it was annoying to hear the mistakes and mispronunciations of the narrator. If it is AI, it should be labeled as such.
As for the book, the content is not really deep but still useful. I picked the book up after needed to get back on my focus train and while this book isn’t “ground breaking” it is certainly an easy read and easily digestible. I’m almost 50 years old and it was useful to me, someone that was once very disciplined and got off track since Covid. I thought of my children or someone else that may be needed an intro to self-discipline. It’s a simple and easy read, I finished it in a couple of days.
The narration I ended up getting used to but it was still a bit annoying, but kept listening because the content was valuable.

It’s a bit “busy” as I didn’t know what to expect, but overall I enjoyed it. He’s a funny story teller and there are some easy to grab stories in this one. It’s a fun motivational book that is good for all ages.

Historia
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Excellent

This book was eye opening and educational. I appreciate how the author speaks about writing and its importance. Highly recommend. And in case you’re wondering, it’s not ALL about Israel and Gaza. Even though you’d think that from what is going on in the media. Actually, I’d say it’s less about the specific situation more than it is about our common humanity and our duty to uphold it.

Historia
Often blamed for the rising rates of obesity and diabetes among black Americans, fast food restaurants like McDonald's have long symbolized capitalism's villainous effects on our nation's most vulnerable communities. But how did fast food restaurants so thoroughly saturate black neighborhoods in the first place? In Franchise, acclaimed historian Marcia Chatelain uncovers a surprising history of cooperation among fast food companies, black capitalists, and civil rights leaders, who believed they found an economic answer to the problem of racial inequality.

Historia
Our current definition of “productivity” is broken. It pushes us to treat busyness as a proxy for useful effort, leading to impossibly lengthy task lists and ceaseless meetings. We’re overwhelmed by all we have to do and on the edge of burnout, left to decide between giving into soul-sapping hustle culture or rejecting ambition altogether. But are these really our only choices?

Cal Newport challenges a lot of our norms and I’m curious about learning more. This was a really good book that pushes against much of what we think it takes to get stuff done.

Lyrical, poetic, and hypnotizing, The Coming tells the story of a people's capture and sojourn from their homeland across the Middle Passage - a traumatic trip that exposed the strength and resolve of the African spirit. Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Timeless work
Revisado: 01-29-22
I’m re reading this book, listening for the first time, and it’s still as good as when I first read it. Brother Malcolm was so young yet he changed the world. Incredible man and incredible book.
I’m not a fan of Mr. Fishburne’s performance on this one. I was excited to hear his voice but there are certain moments that I simply don’t think he captures Brother Malcom’s spirit, tone and inflection. This is undoubtedly an impossible job, but I don’t feel that Brother Malcolm would have read certain words in certain ways. Mr. Fishburne is clear and comforting to listen to, I think that because it is Malcom X which takes the performance down a notch for me.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Malcolm Gladwell delivers another thought provoking masterpiece. This work has caused me to question some cornerstone ideas and beliefs that I’ve long held. Furthermore, the manner in which this audiobook is delivered is groundbreaking and had me thoroughly engaged for the entire length of the audiobook. Bravo Mr. Gladwell bravo!
