Preachy and dogmatic

Creative story and interesting characters but beware because propaganda comes in many forms. Rather than allowing readers to draw their own conclusions we are bludgeoned by the author’s slogans.

Historia
If you asked most people what forces led to today’s unprecedented income inequality and financial crashes, no one would say the Federal Reserve. For most of its history, the Fed has enjoyed the fawning adoration of the press. When the economy grew, it was credited to the Fed. When the economy imploded in 2008, the Fed got credit for rescuing us.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Distracting reader poorly edited
Revisado: 05-08-21
The numerous mispronunciations distracted from a well researched & compelling story. I kept wondering who let all those mistakes through editing. I’ve listened to over 600 books & NEVER encountered this before. You do a grave disservice to your preforming talent letting those mistakes fall through. I am very disappointed!

Historia
The rise to global predominance of Western civilization is the single most important historical phenomenon of the past five hundred years. All over the world, an astonishing proportion of people now work for Western-style companies, study at Western-style universities, vote for Western-style governments, take Western medicines, wear Western clothes, and even work Western hours. Yet six hundred years ago the petty kingdoms of Western Europe seemed unlikely to achieve much more than perpetual internecine warfare. It was Ming China or Ottoman Turkey that had the look of world civilizations.

Niall Ferguson is a WONDERFUL reader!
Revisado: 07-17-15
Would you listen to Civilization again? Why?
I've enjoyed other books by Niall Ferguson. He is lucid and weaves an interesting story out of dry facts and figures. I will listen to his work any time. BUT, if he reads his work himself it is EXTRAORDINARILY BETTER! He brings the passion of his words, the nuance of his humor, and the gift of his insights to light. Please: more of this!

Dr. Hosseini Does it Again! Yeah!
Revisado: 07-23-13
If you could sum up And the Mountains Echoed in three words, what would they be?
The story of several families, over decades, told by various members points of view.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked how an ancillary character introduced in one chapter would become a narrator in subsequent chapters. I liked figuring out who was talking, their age, location and circumstances.
Any additional comments?
In "Kite Runner" Dr. Hosseini managed to interest me in a story of his homeland. In "A Thousand Splendid Suns," he impressed me with his ability to write convincing female characters. In this novel I RELISHED the variety of narrator voices, the intricacy of the story, and the profiles of humanity.
