I listened to the first hour of this and couldn't bring myself to continue. Beezer himself is so obnoxious that I just didn't want to listen any further, and this is only a 2 hour book.

The voice actors were fine, although I could have done without the chewing noises in my ear.

This is more of an audio-drama than an audiobook, and there really isn't a narrator so much as characters talking to each other with a lot of extraneous sound effects.

This does feel like it was meant for younger audiences that may have a higher tolerance for Beezer's antics than I do, but I'm not sure.

Dylan Hatfield has imaginary friends, or so she thinks. When they ask her to help them posses some classmates, things start going sideways and Dylan starts to realize that there may be more going on than her active imagination.

First things first. I was given a promotional code in exchange for my honest review. So here it is.

This is not a bad premise for a YA book and Dylan's struggles with her classmates are certainly relate-able for anyone who dreaded going to school for fear of bullies. I honestly felt for Dylan but there were times where I had to question the adults in Dylan's world because none of them seemed capable of making logical conclusions in regards to Dylan's plight.

And then Dylan makes some bad choices that lead to the central conflict. But the story seems to end suddenly. We reach the climax but there's no satisfying denouement. There are so many questions I had and none of them get answered. Surely, after the events of the story, there would be consequences for everyone. And yet, that was left out and I was left wanting more. Not more story, but more resolution. Plus, I really wanted to see Dylan grow a backbone.

Rachel Leblang's narration is acceptable but not outstanding and the voices all sort of blend together into a whiny buzz. Leblang brings out Dylan's introversion in a way that is more annoying than endearing. It's hard to root for someone who consistently fails to stick up for herself, which is what Leblang's narration suggests.

Younger audiences may find this more interesting than I did and I don't regret having listened.

I really liked this series.

The first book is a survivor's story, in the vein of Robinson Caruso, with Roland Barkus believing he is the only survivor when his space ship, the Ventura, is blown out of the sky after entering orbit around an unknown planet. The world he finds himself in is an odd mix of old technology and medieval society and he soon finds himself the savior and protector of this world's innocents.

The second book reveals that Barkus was not the only survivor and we get to meet other survivors and learn stories, from Jimbo and his team that are stuck on the moon to Rand who, like Barkus, survived crashing to the surface. And the political intrigue jumps up a notch as we start to realize that something sinister is going on with the powers that be.

The third book brings everything to a climax on Earth on the night of the Winter Solstice when something terrible happens.

Throw into the mix an ancient race of immortal beings that are terraforming planets and rogue Artificial Intelligences, and you have the making of a long, complicated story.

This is the second story I've listened to by Martin Wilsey and I like his knack for creating interesting characters and then throwing them to the wolves. There are plenty of reprehensible characters who do reprehensible things such as murder, rape and torture, but I never felt like it was over the top or that we were meant to condone it. Certainly, the main characters do not and Barkus himself is such a kind soul that it angers him just to see people being mistreated.

Give it a listen but be aware that the story changes gears across the three books.

This was one of the monthly freebies and I just could never get into it. I completely blame the audio engineers that added a "spooky" and completely annoying, music background track.

I wanted to like this story, I really did, but I was unable to get through book one, let alone all three books. It's slow, boring and uneven and I found my mind wandering as I listened instead of following the story. That's never a good sign.

It may be that this is meant as YA and I'm far from a young adult but I would think that unless it got more interesting, it's not going to keep the attention of teens.

I was expecting so much more from this story than I really got. It's not bad, it's just not great.

Jake is your average ragamuffin in fictional steampunk London who finds himself caught up in a mystery when his friends go missing. He enlists the aid of a wacky inventor to solve the crime and save his friends. Along the way, he encounters your standard steampunk machinations and even some demons.

Sounds good but I don't feel that it really ever captured the magic potential of this fictional world and the characters never really ring true for me. Some of them are downright obnoxious and I couldn't wait for scenes with them to be over. Not sure if that's the fault of the writer or the narrator.

Hills does a decent job of giving different voices to the characters but some of them talk so slowly that I really wanted to tell them to get on with it.

Anyway, it's obvious that this takes place in a larger world that Black has created based on the references to events and characters we never see or meet. And I'm not sure I'm willing to continue listening in order to see or meet them.

If you like steampunky settings mixed with a little black magic, this might be up your alley.

I really enjoyed the first title in this series and was expecting more of the same. Sadly I was not as taken with this story as I was with the first one. It just doesn't seem to capture the wittiness and humor of the first book. Also, it seemed like the story either had a chapter out of place or I was missing something crucial to understanding what was going on. I got really lost part way into the book and was never able to really piece together what was happening to who and when.

Cary Hite still delivers a great reading.

My favorite character is still David. He's the snarky zombie all urban fantasy needs.

Like a lot of Bible's other novels, this one is part of a much larger story. Taking place in the same universe as his Roak Bounty Hunter stories, this is the tale of the Universe's best and most dangerous drop team.

There are a lot of characters and alien races to keep track of here, though, and if I hadn't already been a fan of Roak, I might not have been able to follow along as well. Unfortunately, since this is an ensemble story, it was hard to really get the feel for any of the main characters. My hope is that as the series progresses, they will get fleshed out more.

And what can I say about Wehrlen? He has yet to disappoint me. He is the perfect fit for Bible's wry sense of humor and I hope he and Bible have a long partnership.

If you're a fan of Roak or like action packed space operas, give this one a try.

Did Not Live Up to Potential

I like Jake Bible's writing and I have listened to my share of Bible's stories. This one did not live up to my expectations. And I can't decide if the story failed me or the narrator failed the story.

Let's start with the story. In a modern world where faires, ogres, harpies, vampires, and zombies are all real, Chase Lawter has a unique ability. He can manipulate the matter between the worlds. He can create "black boxes" which he can then store things in, send them to another place unreachable by anyone but him, and then retrieve it at a later date.

So far, so good. I find the premise interesting but the characters, especially Chase, just fell flat for me and their adventure seemed like a quest for the Macguffin with no real impotence.

Next, we have J. Scott Bennett as the narrator, a narrator I must add, that narrates one of my favorite fantasy series. I love his voice in that series. He so embodies the characters of that world. However, I don't think he's right for Bible's quick talking, snarky characters. I think a lot of the humor underlying the characters was lost because Bennett's delivery doesn't lend itself to these characters. I still think he's a good narrator; I just don't think he was meant for this story.

Should you listen to this? Maybe. It was a decent story. But unlike some of Bible's other series, I wasn't excited about book 2.

Admittedly, I was drawn to this title only because it mentioned cats in a sci-fi setting. And I wasn't disappointed.

This is a tale of coming to terms with who and what you are while trying to survive. The science behind this is actually interesting and does a good job of setting up and explaining Shining's odd abilities, the secrets of her junkyard, and the devotion a clowder of cats has for her.

Hvam's narration was wonderful and she gives personality and voice to all the characters, yes, including the cats, even if it's only meow.
