Historia
Through Jim Burden's endearing, smitten voice, we revisit the remarkable vicissitudes of immigrant life in the Nebraska heartland, with all its insistent bonds. Guiding the way are some of literature's most beguiling characters: the Russian brothers plagued by memories of a fateful sleigh ride, Antonia's desperately homesick father and self-indulgent mother, and the coy Lena Lingard. Holding the pastoral society's heart, of course, is the bewitching, free-spirited Antonia.

Historia
In How the World Made the West, Josephine Quinn poses perhaps the most significant challenge ever to the “civilizational thinking” regarding the origins of Western culture—that is, the idea that civilizations arose separately and distinctly from one another. Rather, she locates the roots of the modern West in everything from the law codes of Babylon, Assyrian irrigation, and the Phoenician art of sail to Indian literature, Arabic scholarship, and the metalworking riders of the Steppe, to name just a few examples.

You better like your history straight, no chaser. I certainly do. If your interest in BCE is just starting, this book would be a real struggle to assemble five thousand years before CE. It is scholarly and wonderful. Fills in gaps I didn’t know existed. Brilliant.

The line between
Revisado: 05-13-23
The line between good and evil goes through each heart. And it moves from one side to the other in different seasons of our lives.
Thus book captures the brokenness of us as people. There is no way to capture the greatness of this book other than by submitting yourself to it. It will never leave you.

A riveting saga in the history of rock ‘n’ roll: the decades-long rivalry between the two men who innovated the electric guitar’s amplified sound - Leo Fender and Les Paul - and their intense competition to convince rock stars like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton to play the instruments they built.

Thoughtful Music History
Revisado: 01-23-19
Hard to imagine any guitar player or guitar fan not thoroughly enjoying this book. There’s lots to learn. But new facts aren’t a main intention of the author. Rather, this is a very well conceived and disciplined reflection of the promise of the title.
The book’s only flaw is when it veers toward historical fiction by imagining interior feelings, weather specifics and facial expressions these men may well have experienced but they play out as subjective decorative guesses.
However it is easy to recommend this book and know that if the title intrigues you you’ll get the promised story and it is a delightful contribution to 20th-century music history.

Part A, Part B
Revisado: 07-20-18
Part A, the vast majority of this book, is compelling and inspiring. I keep reading books on this topic and this is my favorite. I come away from these books with at least the lowest level achieved, “I know they believe what they’re writing“. This book I find more compelling. I believe what she says is true.
Part B needs to be evaluated by the reader. I am a recovering engineer and find this step-by-step process to trusting God to be too wooden. And probably too demanding and complicated. However if you are inclined to give it a run there would be nothing counterproductive in it. If you were the right person for her prescription, it likely would be is life-changing as she says.

Historia
When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's portrait of the Jazz Age in all its decadence and excess, is, as editor Maxwell Perkins praised it in 1924, "a wonder". It remains one of the most widely read, translated, admired, imitated, and studied 20th-century works of American fiction.

Why Audiobooks Rock
Revisado: 10-17-10
The debate over text to speech being anything similar to a "performance" (as the law is attempting to distinguish) is completely put to rest here. If you have only seen the movie then you owe it to yourself to find out the complete story and the complete character(s) of Gatsby. The performance brings this book to life. One of the best readings of any book I have heard (out of hundreds). Tim Robbins, not usually a favorite of mine, is perfect. A genuinely subtle and penetrating reading of Gatsby. Voices for each character that are spot on. So often narrators changing voices draws too much attention to itself. Not here. Highly recommended.

Audiobook experience at the highest level
Revisado: 10-06-09
This always remarkable book comes alive with this reading. I love audio books for their convenience and I get through many more books in audio format than I do with physical books. Comparing what I get from sitting in a chair reading to listening to a book generally is a toss up for me often with reading the book getting a slight edge. But once in a while the audio format far exceeds the page turning experience. This book is a perfect example of how well audio books can be done.

Historia
In 1789 a group of sober-minded, concerned citizens set in motion a series of events which were to end up leading to the deaths of thousands of perfectly innocent persons. How did this reasonable movement of level-headed civic leaders spin out of control? At a glance, the French Revolution appears a bewildering series of political factions sweeping in and out of power, massacre and counter-massacre, terror and guillotine, and one economic crisis following another.
