Historia
Most of us know we own too much stuff. We feel the weight and burden of our clutter, and we tire of cleaning and managing and organizing. While excess consumption leads to bigger houses, faster cars, fancier technology, and cluttered homes, it never brings happiness. Rather, it results in a desire for more. It redirects our greatest passions to things that can never fulfill, and it distracts us from the very lives we wish we were living. But it doesn't have to be this way.

If you want to hear about Jesus...
Revisado: 04-23-25
A lot of good points, but I wish the description would have been a LOT more transparent about the author being a pastor, with endless biblical references and parables. Not what I came here for, and it got increasingly irritating. I have absolutely no problem with the book or it's content, but at least describe the content accurately so people can make an informed decision.

Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Not his best
Revisado: 08-01-24
I'm a huge Stephen King fan, and love his collections of short stories. This tome was severely lacking. The stories were hard to get into, and once you got into them, they ended abruptly, without any sense of purpose or reason. I don't think that every ending needs to be tied up with a bow, but these endings were incredibly unsatisfying. I felt robbed of my time and attention with each and every one. and every story was completely unmemorable.

Historia
Since the death of bin Laden in 2011, ISIS has risen, al-Qaeda has expanded its reach, and right-wing extremists have surged in the US for the same simple reason: terrorism works. It’s not caused by psychosis or irrationality, as the media often suggests. Instead, it’s terrifyingly logical. Violent acts produce political results. To show why, Walter Laqueur and Christopher Wall explore the history, rationales, and precepts of terrorism, from the assassination of Tsar Alexander II, through the terror campaigns by Irish and Indian nationalists, and to the Nazis and Italian Fascists.

A great historical overview of ideas
Revisado: 05-24-24
This book by one of the great American thinkers and researchers on the topic of terrorism is a useful book that should be read by anybody interested in terrorism and counterterrorism in the US. Hindsight is 20/20, but the last part of this book is lacking and suffers from political bias, especially a deathly aversion to the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Lacqueur goes off on the horrors of the political reality in 2018, would have dropped dead if he had seen the 2020 assault on the Capitol, but more seriously, could never have had the open-mindedness to consider the elimination of al-Baghdadi and the collapse of ISIS, the Abraham Accords, the disastrous Afghanistan pullout under another president or the current newfound admiration for Palestinian terrorists in Academia, reminiscent of the late 1960s-early 1970s. Like most researchers, his predictions for the "future of terrorism" are off and completely outdated, but most of the book offers, nevertheless, a solid analysis of different themes, myths and realities of terrorism, as seen through an American, Western liberal lens.

Amazing cast, performance, and a great classic
Revisado: 06-22-23
This classic work chock-full of slang and creative expressions and expletives presents an hilarious and fascinating dive into the lives of working-class Parisians. The cast and voices are amazing. This is one of the best audio productions I have ever listened to on audiobook.

Historia
The first collection of stories Stephen King has published since Nightmares & Dreamscapes nine years ago, Everything's Eventual includes one O. Henry Prize winner, two other award winners, four stories published by The New Yorker, and "Riding the Bullet", King's original e-book, which attracted over half a million online readers and became the most famous short story of the decade. Intense, eerie, and instantly compelling, they announce the stunningly fertile imagination of perhaps the greatest storyteller of our time.

Stephen' STOP!
Revisado: 09-06-22
One star lost for Stephen King reading his own stuff. He has a glottal "L" that is so distracting, it's maddening. Stephen, I ADORE you and your work, but if you insist on reading aloud, please see a speech pathologist and work ou those "L" sounds, because it sounds like you're swallowing your own tongue. Justin Long was awesome.

Meh...
Revisado: 08-29-21
Why would you choose a narrator for The House on Maple Street with a massive distracting lisp and a wacky accent??? It's one of my favorite stories but was unlistenable due to her marble-mouthed delivery. Annoying. Also annoying is that it's not broken up into chapters by story, so you have to search for a story as if it's a cassette mixtape. I love this book, but what a lackluster attempt on the audiobook.

Historia
In 1866, 12 men and women and one small child were forced aboard a leaky schooner and cast away to a natural prison on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Two weeks later, a dozen others were exiled, and then 40 more, and then 100 more. Tracked by bounty hunters and torn screaming from their families, the luckless were loaded into shipboard cattle stalls and abandoned in a lawless place where brutality held sway. Many did not have leprosy, and most of those who did were not contagious.

good book, bad reader
Revisado: 04-10-09
This is a very interesting book, about a fascinating aspect of history. Having read James Michener's "Hawaii," I was familiar with the story of Molokaii. I feel grateful to the author for making Father Damien's story more known. The main drawback of this audiobook, was the incredibly annoying narration. Every character, whether German, French, Dutch, Hawaiian had the same nasal, inconsistent "Pepe Le Pew" accent- SO irritating! If a narrator can't do good accents, he should just leave well enough alone and read it straight.
