Very Engrossing Story and Story Telling

The writer is excellent at painting pictures with his words, as is the performer with his voice.

Historia
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Excellent Storytelling
Revisado: 03-30-19
The book really kept my attention. There were small subplots weaving in and out throughout the story. My only complaint was that going back and forth between them took extra effort each time you returned to a previous place and time. But I wouldn't change a thing.

Historia
After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since, the land has belonged to man, and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated.

Good Story; Excellent Narration
Revisado: 04-26-18
I think I was spoiled by the first book in this series that I listened to (I believe it was titled The Serpents Shadow). This story gets high points for its unique and interesting characters, but the plotline moves along too slowly for my taste. As with many other books, it's gets better toward the end.

Very Enjoyable
Revisado: 04-24-18
I didn't really know what to expect, as all my previous Lackey books had been very different from this. However it was extremely entertaining. The story was well developed, with distinct surprises toward the end. The narration was one of the best I have ever heard! This was especially welcome as the last book I listened to ( one of the dragon chronicles) had very disappointing narration. I'm looking forward to more like this.

Unbearably Tedious
Revisado: 01-19-18
It is unusual for me to give a negative review. I have read (or listened to) qover 15 other books by Mercedes Lackey and enjoyed them all. It is hard to believe that this one was written by the same author. I forced myself to read as much as I did, because I wanted to give the book sufficient time to improve. It did not.
The story was written as a narration from an outside source, capable of observing the characters and able to read their thoughts. It was very tiresome; like a disembodied voice describing the actions taking place, devoid of feeling or empathy for the characters involved.

Historia
Mags was a Herald of Valdemar. But he had once lived the brutal life of a child slave. When he was Chosen by his Companion Dallen, his young life was saved, and he slowly adjusted to being well fed, educated, and treasured as a trainee in the Herald's Collegium at Haven. Singled out by the King's Own Herald, Mags would thrive in his secret training as a spy. His unusually strong Gift - an ability to Mindspeak and Mindhear anyone, not just others who were Gifted - made him a perfect undercover agent for the king.

Hard to put Down
Revisado: 01-15-18
The author has woven many disparate threads, each representing it's own story line - and then merges them all masterly together by the conclusion. I marvel at her imagination.
The narrator is fantastic! I have started other books that I subsequently put down because of the of the narration. He uses inflections of voice and accentuation to deftly portray each character's individuality. I don't think anyone could do a better job.
