Historia
On a small two-lane bridge in a rural county that loathes the federal government, the US Army uses lethal force to end a standoff with hard-right anti-government patriots. Inside an ordinary diner, a disaffected young man with a handgun takes aim at the American president stepping in for an impromptu photo-op, and a bullet splits the hyper-partisan country into violently opposed mourners and revelers.

Some interesting parallels…BUT
Revisado: 08-01-24
The authors conclusion is utter drivel. His mistake? Assuming whole states are homogenous in their politics. Maybe try looking at the Pew Research center’s map of the electorate Mr Marche. We will not stand for secession; not even in Texas. Nice try, but seriously get a grip. The solution is NOT to aim for neutrality.

Historia
Assembled from notes and jottings left unpublished at the time of the author’s death, The Book of Disquiet is a collection of aphoristic prose-poetry musings on dreams, solitude, time and memory. Credited to Pessoa’s alter ego, Bernardo Soares, who chronicles his contemplations in this so-called "factless" autobiography, the work is a journey of one man’s soul and, by extension, of all human souls that allow their minds and hearts to roam far and free.

a vitally important, and beautiful work
Revisado: 04-03-19
if you stick with it, you will get something out of this work, and just maybe be moved by it. It is beautifully introspective and must be taken both lightly and seriously. but, if you can’t keep an open mind then I seriously wouldn’t bother.

What an incredible piece of writing. Weaves a dreamlike, lyrical tale. If you like stories as told through the eyes of the characters, you'll like this. Otherwise, this would probably be a slog.

Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Writing is eloquently profound
Revisado: 08-10-17
His influence from Vonnegut really shows. People says it's ethereal and dreamlike, which I would agree with. But it's also more--a character study that presents us with symbols and archetypes and asks us to consider them. Really a masterful work, and a delightful read.

Holy cow that was a long read! Basically a 2-part story, with the first part longer than the second. I enjoyed the first part quite a bit.

Historia
When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there’s either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills - and there’s nothing wrong with Joe Ledger’s skills. And that’s both a good and a bad thing. It’s good because he’s a Baltimore detective who has just been secretly recruited by the government to lead a new task force created to deal with the problems that Homeland Security can’t handle....

Brain candy
Revisado: 06-01-17
I enjoyed it, and I love the research that went into the sciencey parts of this. Nicely done from that pov. Writing is decent, as is the story. But it's predictable in a bunch of spots. Perfect though as a backdrop to other activities. It doesn't require all that much brain power to follow. I would get the next in the series if I had a credit to burn.

Entertaining brain candy

The premise was entertaining enough, and I love the use of time dilation as a plot device. I probably will read the next installment l, though the voicing for Kern was less than ideal.

Historia
Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

A compelling read. Somehow I missed reading this--it was before my "time" but such works are timeless all the same. Such lyrical prose. Definitely will read more of his work.
