They were heading for Mexico, where there were sympathizers who could help them return to their fatherland. It was the only large-scale domestic escape by foreign prisoners in US history.

Well done, enjoyed the story....only issue was the pronunciation of Gila River and Palo Verde incorrectly over and over. Research the area and local names before reading to the masses...
