Humanizing Disability
Revisado: 05-07-24
As a disabled fan of American Girl, the depiction of Speaking Rain, Kaya'aton'my's sister, is something I deeply appreciate. She's accommodated in order to be a contributing member of society, and is valued for what she can do. She isn't pushed to do things she isn't capable of by the adults, but they help her to learn skills that help her contribute. As for who she is, she's compassionate and loyal, always sticking by her sister even if Kaya's mistakes negatively affect her.

Historia
Melody Ellison can’t wait to sing her first solo at church, and she wants to pick a song that’s special. She gets advice from her big brother, who has his sights set on becoming a Motown star, and inspiration from her older sister, who’s home from college with new ideas about marches and protests and making things fair. When Melody experiences discrimination for herself, she decides to stand up and speak out about civil rights, too. As her solo approaches, an unimaginable tragedy leaves her silent. Can Melody find her voice to speak up for those who can’t?

Informative & Easy To Connect With
Revisado: 05-01-24
I've learned more about the Civil Rights movement listening to this audiobook, than I have in my 21 years of living in the U.S.A. I felt like I was able to emotionally connect with the protagonist and her family, and loved how different perspectives of people living during the time could be seen in Melody, Yvonne, Dwayne, and Charles. This was a beautiful production of an engaging story that I'm so happy to have listened to.
