Did Columbus believe that God called him west to undiscovered lands? Does American democracy owe its inception to the handful of Pilgrims that settled at Plymouth? If, indeed, there was a specific, divine call upon this nation, is it still valid today?

Incredible book
Revisado: 12-21-11
Where does The Light and the Glory rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best books I've listened to. It is not only enjoyable, but extremely enlightening about our nation's history.
Any additional comments?
I give this book my highest possible recommendation. I hope that audible releases the other two books of this series in unabridged form as well.

Great book, start to a great series
Revisado: 06-03-05
I started the book with some reservation, wondering if such a long book could keep my interest without dragging. I not only loved the book, but have now listened to the next two in the series. The only negative; the series is six books long, and the last book will likely not be out for another 6-8 years, if he continues his current pace.

Historia
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six. They were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry was thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future.

Don't make the mistake of buying into the reviews
Revisado: 03-21-05
For me, buying this book was an example of the mistake of following the crowd. I thought, "with over 500 reviews and such a high rating, the book has to be great." Big mistake. This is a good "chicks" book, but unless your one of the few men who really like going to see "chick flicks" with your wife, don't buy the hype.

good story, bad diolog, terrible reader
Revisado: 01-12-05
Overall, I would say that it was a good story that drew me it. I agree with others that at times the diolog was lacking. The main characters often came off as 20 year old air-heads rather than powerful lawyers in Washington. This sense was made worse by the reader, especially how he read women's voices. Every woman came across as a total ditz, at times making almost painful to read. All said, the quality of the story overcame the other weaknesses.

Historia
The war of 1812 would either make America a global power sweeping all the way to the Pacific or break it into small pieces bound to mighty England. It was a second revolution of sorts to prove to the British that America had to be taken seriously. The principal players in this drama were James and Dolley Madison and Andrew and Rachel Jackson. Their courage and determination would shape America's destiny.

good, but no Shaara
Revisado: 12-23-04
For a lover of historical fiction, I really looked forward to this novel. Overall it was good, but disappointing. The author was too fixated on the sex lives of the characters, all of whom had no depth in their relationships other than physical attraction. It is a worthwhile listen, but keep your expectations down.

Historia
In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command - "Fire!" - as England's peacekeeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a tumultuous trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred. The taut courtroom drama soon broadens into a stunning epic of war as King George III leads a reckless and corrupt government in London toward the escalating abuse of his colonies.

Great book hurt greatly as abridged
Revisado: 04-08-04
This is a great book which introduces you to historical characters and events in a new way and depth. Unfortuatly the abridged version can only tell of the events without letting you get to know the people behind the events, or the depth of the issues that drove them. If they ever release the unabridged version, I will gladly buy it and recommend it.

Attorney Calvin Dexter hangs his shingle in a quiet New Jersey town, has a reasonably successful practice, and takes the hills strong while triathlon training. But Dexter is no ordinary lawyer. On Sundays, he reads the paper and shuffles around his dark, empty house, trying to forget about a life he has lost forever. Until, of course, Dexter reads something in the papers that sends him the necessary signal. Until one of the handful who know of Dexter's other life tries to contact him. For in a world that has forgotten right and wrong, few can settle a score like Cal Dexter can.

Fiction dangerously close to the truth
Revisado: 03-24-04
This is a well written story, with characters and plot that will draw you in, but beyond that, it deals with issues (terrorism, UBL, CIA rules of opperation) that are right off of today's headlines. It is a great story that will make you think about the issues that the inteligence community struggled with prior to 9-11.

Enjoy learning about history
Revisado: 03-24-04
This was my first Shaara book, and I learned why many people love him as an author. At first I almost didn't get the book because it was an period I didn't care much about. I learned that my lack of interest was really due to a lack of knowledge. I not only enjoyed learning more about a fogotten period of our history, but enjoyed learning about the early military experiences of many of the men who would later become the leaders of both sides during the civil war.
