I love Kate Reading and I enjoyed the Keeper Chronicles but I had to stop 30 hours into this book because the romance between the female lead and the loser guy is just so cringe to listen to.

Preachy mostly off-topic issues, not toxins
Revisado: 03-20-24
Pre-ordered this book because I wanted to support the author but was highly disappointed, as after about the first two chapters of mediocre toxin discussion, it quickly devolves into off-topic issues not about toxins, which are kind of boring and basic.
It just seems like the author used this book as a soapbox to discuss other 'crunchy' ideas while ignoring what the title promised.
I'm crunchy myself, and agreed with much of what she wrote anyways, but I felt this bait-n-switch style was a bit dishonest and left me feeling robbed of the info I signed up for, while simultaneously feeling like info I didn't sign up was being shoved down my throat (even though I agreed with it).
I understand the author wanted to get all the important information out there to help as many people as possible in as many areas as possible, which is an honorable goal. At the same time, she could have just separated this info into more books and made a much smoother and more thorough read (and she could go into more detail on the subjects she did attempt to weave-in, because those were also lacking, info was sacrificed both ways with this 'all-inclusive' approach)!
This book would've been a lot more helpful with an exclusive focus on toxins rather than broad health, people could recieve the full details about toxins as they intended when purchasing, rather than having to sacrifice much of the How, What, Why, and Where, of promised toxin info which this book ended up skimming over.
Toxins, being such a huge subject, could've filled more of the pages instead of jumping around to random thinly-veiled preachy issues like "go to church", which can be a toxic environment in itself (this wasn't mentioned), and "prioritize extended family", whom the author acknowledges can be toxic, but assures you that you can find a way to make it work, (and she gives good suggestions) but this is often false hope given to individuals from abusive families and putting it this way is incomplete. It's enabling toxic environments to thrive and for potential cycle breakers to not break free and rather sacrifice themselves and their kids for some benefit of having *family*, toxic or not. Which directly contradicts the spirit of the writing, but it is what was harvested after sowing these ideas with no caveats/details to account for those readers coming from deeply-entrenched toxic family systems.
I understand this wasn't her intent but these issues need many caveats (like creating your own family and how to tell when its time to cut out relationships) which she didn't include and which could've worked had these topics been made into their own book rather than stuffed between the pages of this book.
You can definately tell this was her first book, as she was trying to cram a bunch of mismatched issues all into one which seems like it would be helpful but it ended up being distracting, redundant, and ironically - toxic at times.
If there weren't so many 5 star reviews I would've rated it 3 stars and the performance 4 (I love her annoyingly nasally voice and she has great vocal engagement for narrating her own book) but I had to even out the ratings and give warnings to others who might be on the fence. You can find better info almost anywhere online where toxins are discussed, and pass this one if toxin information is what you're looking for.
(If the author sees this, sorry for the novel in response to your book! I would love to read more of your books and I hope to see more detailed info in those too - I know it's scary to share your personal conclusions on aspects of children's health and birth, and you're trying not to isolate any of your audience - at the same time, you can't please everyone and sometimes lines in the sand do need to be drawn. I would appreciate a more thorough breakdown on the negative health consequences of RIC and the danger of other 'Routine' practices in your next health-focused book! Thank you for your work on this book. I'll still recommend it for new moms.)

This is the question that kicks off a curious and winding learning journey in How to Make the Matriarchy: The Power and Promise of Prioritizing Women. Maureen Devine-Ahl explores inspiring stories, cautionary tales, and takeaway lessons from around the world on what it will take to build a more gender-balanced future, and in doing so, quickly learns that empowering women empowers humanity. patriarchal controlled opposition
Revisado: 08-03-23
I haven't read the whole book, not even close, couldnt even get passed the into. So maybe this book is amazing after the intro, but the corruption in the introduction made me stop. I tried to pick it up 3 times and each time a glaring red flag flew high and weirdly proud.
Let me start by saying that I fully believe Matriarchy is the key, and yet those same principles are the reason I could not invest more time into this book. She starts off by saying an old white man being president was a matriarchal win for women because of a female vice. Weird, but everyone has their political opinions so maybe the author just tends to see many things in a positive light. I can resonate with that. But then she continues on to say that the only way for a matriarchy to work is if men are given equality too. OK, maybe that's true, but after a few centuries of reparations with women and children at the forefront of society's focus. Men *must* recieve the short end of the stick for a substantial amount of time. Otherwise it's not true equality. Still, I tried to continue with the book.
She goes on to say that there is a Tibetan matriarchal society where women control the sex and it's not used for reproduction, only pleasure. She poses the question "is this really better than how men have sexually controlled us?" How is this even a question with all the centuries of sexual slavery, women bought and sold from childhood... is this author even a feminist? She supports a very patriarchal view of "equality" and sympathizes with the abusers. This is the opposite of what will create a strong matriarchy, where women and children are centered.
I am very pro-men, not some radical separatist (though, that is a valid stance), I have a husband of ten years, three kids - two of which are sons - and I still would never create a matriarchy with this goal of "equality" guiding us because it doesn't actually benefit women, children, or men. We need a shift that is guided by a reparations mindset. We can't half ass it. We can't make it palatable to men. We do not need men to agree with a matriarchy in order to make it happen. Women are powerful, the ultimate creators, and we will create it for ourselves, without needing to play pickme politics with men, and without needing to encourage other women to be fair, balanced, or consider men's perspective. Let's shift the focus to benefiting ourselves and our children, the men will be absolutely fine. Men don't have to follow. but many will, because that's their natural response towards women of high ethics and standards; we are the natural leaders and they know it.

Two books and almost zero plot plot development.
Revisado: 03-05-22
The longer it goes without book 3 the angrier I get at the waste of potential in this story. The book starts off strong with intrigue and decent character development that gets you attached. The problem is the main chunk of the story reads like some college-central drama dealing with trivial personal relationships that would be fine if it was balanced with more plot development and action.
If you are looking for a story with some umph I recommend The Wheel of Time, as its clear Rothfuss get some of his inspiration there (Swordplay names etc.) and you get a good story with each book not just 2 books of prologue building you up to the promised story to come.

Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.
