There was much in this I never knew about the greatest ever English manager.
Humble yet shrewd a great tactician yet also flawed when dealing with some players.
This is a great read for Liverpool fans and fans in general .

Reading/Listening to a book about one of your sporting heroes is often a daunting task, but this one is very very good. It tells you a lot you knew about Both and a lot you may not have known.

Typical of the man,he pulls no punches whatsoever in this book.

An excellent warts-n-all look at a brilliant cricketer.

This is an excellent book on a difficult subject. With so many books on or about this subject it is always difficult to find one that covers it so comprehensively and especially as it is a truncated version of his two volume biography it certainly does not seem so.

Excellent information on Hitler's early life and influences much of which I had not read about before all the way up to his last days in the bunker which is covered with good detail using sources close to the final days in the bunker.

All in all a very good listen.

Highly recommended.

Some excellent stories. However, this should really come into the Abridged section as having read the original physical book there are at 2 stories missing from the original book, There Are No Snakes in Ireland is one (in my opinion the best from the original book) and Duty. If these were included it would get 5 stars from me.

This is largely a personal account and a narrative and really needs to be looked at as such. There are some things that are glaringly omitted which would be in a general history and a lot that is personal opinion. To put it into perspective, William L Shirer was a journalist in Germany and Austria at the time of the rise of the Third Reich and sees from a unique personal perspective on the ground. He also bases a lot of this work on the official documents from Nazi Germany.

The coverage of the rise of Nazi Germany is thoughtful, insightful and intriguing and covers more than half of the book. Not much is given over to what the Nazis did while they were in power but more attention is paid to the last few days of the war and the regime.

Overall a very good piece on especially the origins of the Nazi Party and Hitler.

This is one of the best historical books I have read/listened to. Tony Judt is one of the finest minds in his field of his generation and comprehensively covers many areas of Postwar Europe.

It is superbly written and evidently exhaustively researched. Covers a lot of ground that I myself hadn't covered before and goes a long way in explaining the current Eastern European conflicts and the ground work for the EU and beyond. Whether you agree with Judt's conclusions or his standpoints is immaterial, there is no doubt in my mind that this book opens a lot of people's eyes on the Europe we had and why we have arrived at what we have now. I intend to read more of his books,

The narration, by Ralph Cosham (who I believe has done a few other of Judt's works is clear and intelligible.

Highly recommended.
