What makes a romance novel a romance? Writing a well-structured romance isn't the same as writing any other genre - something the popular novel and screenwriting guides don't address. The romance arc is made up of its own story beats. Told in conversational (and often irreverent) prose, Romancing the Beat is like sitting down to coffee with romance editor and author Gwen Hayes while she explains story structure - the way she does with her clients, some of whom are regular inhabitants of the best-seller lists.

Basic

It tried to be like Save the Cat but it was overly simplistic and short, could definitely have been fleshed out a little more. 20+ chapters 3-4 minutes a piece cutesy playful tone with song references never delved into, but otherwise not much meat in the soup.

Pleasantly Surprised
Revisado: 12-23-23
I bought this on impulse to pass some time and not expecting much only to get sunk into it. I enjoyed the vibe of the main character of the first chunk "Haunting at Bell Mansion" a lot and her snappy comebacks kept everything fresh. The narrator was a blessing too, very smooth and even toned.

Marvelous Lectures, just wish the chapters were named
Revisado: 12-09-23
I loved every minute of this writing guide, very down to earth and very understandable. There were points I wanted to go back to but the chapters not being named can be irksome when I'm just trying to find a specific idea again. Other than that I have no complaints about this one, a true favorite among many that I've bought.

Incredible study in the self publishing strategy
Revisado: 04-08-23
This book is far more about the Business side thant the craft side and that's exactly what I was looking for. I found this priceless though I may be biased because the concept of "Book Funneling" as a marketing tool is what was always in my mind, and having a real world example of those who are successfully doing it is encouraging, they also give plenty of references on the best places to sell your book, pricing advice and references to other books on marketing your book post-production. This purchase was worth every penny, the narrator has a charm to him and was easy to listen to, that was just a bonus.

I was intimidated for a long time to take a dive into the great Russian authors and this was a perfect introduction to me, half biography and half book reviews, I listened to this through my work shifts and enjoyed every minute. The narrator has plenty of energy and was a pleasure to listen which by itself is rare enough.

Historia
Successful sea rovers were careful practitioners of a complex profession that sought wealth by stratagem and force of arms. Drawn from the European tradition, yet of various races and nationalities, they raided both ship and town throughout much of the world from roughly 1630 until 1730. Using a variety of innovative tactics and often armed with little more than musket and grenade, many of these self-described "soldiers and privateers" successfully assaulted fortifications, attacked shipping from small craft, and even circumnavigated the globe.

As a lover of pirates I'm satisfied
Revisado: 11-16-22
Not too little not too much, this was a journey through the romantics of every pirate film I ever seen, less a lesson on how to sail and more about how a band of pirates is formed; wealth distributed; crime and punishment; and rules and regulations. A quick skim over the general topic without getting deep enough into fine details as to get boring, just enough. As a fiction writer there's endless resources here to make a story pop as more authentic, and it's an interesting history lesson aside from that. I enjoyed this greatly.

Have you ever read a suspense novel so good you had to stop and think to yourself, "How did the author come up with this idea? Their characters? Is some of this story real?" For more than five years, Mark Rubinstein, physician, psychiatrist, and mystery and thriller writer, had the chance to ask the most well-known authors in the field just these kinds of questions in interviews for the Huffington Post. Collected here are interviews with 47 accomplished authors, including Michael Connelly, Ken Follett, Meg Gardiner, Dennis Lehane, Laura Lippman, and Don Winslow.

As a writer it was therapy to hear the private thoughts of these amazing authors, their insecurities and doubts coupled with their trials and tribulations was nourishing to the spirit. I intimately felt every minute of this, hands down my favorite book regarding writing so far.
