Historia
When the young half-goblin emperor Maia sought to learn who had set the bombs that killed his father and half-brothers, he turned to an obscure resident of his father’s Court, a Prelate of Ulis and a Witness for the Dead. Thara Celehar found the truth, though it did him no good to discover it. He lost his place as a retainer of his cousin the former Empress, and made far too many enemies among the many factions vying for power in the new Court. The favor of the Emperor is a dangerous coin.

This took much longer for me to get into than "The Goblin Emperor". But I did end up liking it.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

slow but makes you think
Revisado: 07-19-21
I spent several hours at the start wondering if I would like this book. By the end, I liked it unequivocally. This book is depressing in that it outlines a problem humankind has that it's possible we won't solve. There is no clean hopeful ending here, just a book that makes you feel something needs to be done. A book that condemns the bystanders.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Amazing
Revisado: 03-09-21
This may be my favorite of Naomi Novik's novels. I worried that the premise of a magical school was overdone, but I was hooked from page one. I found the main character especially compelling. Can hardly wait for the next one.

great but hard
Revisado: 04-21-20
This was a great book, but the second person narration made it difficult to follow at first. I had to listen to the first few minutes about five times before it clicked. It becomes much easier to follow and enjoy after you guess who the narrator is.

What will become of our self-destructed planet? The answer shatters all expectations in this subversive speculation from the Hugo Award - winning author of the Broken Earth trilogy. An explorer returns to gather information from a climate-ravaged Earth that his ancestors, and others among the planet’s finest, fled centuries ago. The mission comes with a warning: A graveyard world awaits him. But so do those left behind - hopeless and unbeautiful wastes of humanity who should have died out ages ago.

Historia
In celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fras and suurs prepare to venture outside the concent's gates - opening them wide at the same time to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fra, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected". But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the perilous brink of cataclysmic change.

Hated the start, but loved the book.
Revisado: 06-22-15
Word of warning: skip the front matter. There is a long history of the world, as well as an explanation of how stuff is pronounced at the front that it was a bad idea for them to put at the front of the audiobook version.
I was all set to give up on this book for about the first 30 minutes. It seemed boring and the reader was very slow. Fortunately, I was at the gym with nothing else to listen to, so I persevered, set playback speed to 1.5x, and ended up loving it.
Another word of warning: this book is not for everyone. It is set in what is essentially a "monastery for scientists" in an alternate universe. It is a fairly good example of "Hard Science Fiction" i.e. all the stuff that happens is mostly feasible within our current understanding of physics. If you think listening to people have conversations about science/philosophy is interesting, this may be the book for you. Otherwise, it probably isn't.

Historia
Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

don't expect to like anyone in this book
Revisado: 01-23-15
I usually can't enjoy a book without liking the characters, but somehow this kept my interest despite the main character being worse than the villains in most books. I never liked him, but I was interested enough to want to see how he ended up. The narrator pauses an unusually long time between sentences though.

Historia
Acclaimed fantasist Mary Robinette Kowal has enchanted many fans with her beloved novels featuring a Regency setting in which magic--known here as glamour--is real. In Valour and Vanity, master glamourists Jane and Vincent find themselves in the sort of a magical adventure that might result if Jane Austen wrote Ocean's Eleven. After Melody's wedding, the Ellsworths and Vincents accompany the young couple on their tour of the continent. Jane and Vincent plan to separate from the party and travel to Murano to study with glassblowers there, but their ship is set upon by Barbary corsairs while en route. It is their good fortune that they are not enslaved, but they lose everything to the pirates and arrive in Murano destitute.

Better as author than reader
Revisado: 06-18-14
I read and liked the first three books in this series, and was pleased to buy the fourth. I liked the story, but I kinda wish I'd read it rather than listened. Mary is a great writer, and has a good voice, but I came out liking this a little less than previous books. I think its simply the change in format: I got used to the experience of reading, so switching to listening made me dislike it. Also, she reads a little slower than I prefer, which can be slightly annoying.
Summary: listen if you listened to the previous ones and liked them. Don't switch from reading to listening halfway through the series.

Historia
On the planet of Discworld, phrases like "there's a Death in the family" take on a whole new meaning. Young Susan has always suspected that her Grandfather was different, as though all the time he spent riding a white horse and wielding a scythe weren't enough of a giveaway. Now that her worst fears have been confirmed, Susan learns that she's expected to take over the family business when she grows up, even though most people mistake her for the Tooth Fairy.

Low sound quality
Revisado: 06-11-11
I was disappointed by the audio quality of this book. It was clearly copied from a tape (at one point they failed to edit out a the narrator announcing: "side 3") This is fairly disappointing since you get low level white noise throughout the length of the book. Audible.com usually delivers books at almost CD quality, and this one was just not there.
The book itself is not one of Pratchett's best(still good though). The events in it follow those in "Mort" and "Reaper Man" and precede those in "Hogfather." You do not need to read those to enjoy this one though, the story stands up quite well on it's own.
