Historia
Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the god king one of them has to marry, the lesser god who doesn’t like his job, and the immortal who’s still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago. Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren’s capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people.

Sanderson’s Underrated Standalone
Revisado: 12-16-23
Sanderson covers more story and humanity in this single novel than in his usual two—and those twice as long as Warbreaker. I like Sanderson, but this novel has all his genius with more humanity and a better pace than he usually achieves.

Historia
After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war. Neither side has gained an advantage, and the threat of a betrayal by Dalinar’s crafty ally Taravangian looms over every strategic move. Now, as new technological discoveries by Navani Kholin’s scholars begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation. The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals.

Gripping escalation with a few lulls
Revisado: 11-30-23
Great character development and escalation of the story. The destination is worth the journey, but I felt a bit too much like Kaladin as I slogged through the meandering middle before finally arriving somewhere.

A must-read side story to Stormlight
Revisado: 09-22-23
You will slide through this novella in a day or two with its adorable protagonist Lift. It is a welcome side story within the world of the Stormlight Archive that gives important information while developing characters you will love and providing a necessary break to the all too grownup worries of Khaladin, Shalon, and Dalinar.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus - the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination - is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence.

Grotesque, Ridiculous, and Dissatisfying
Revisado: 03-19-23
As is often the case with Neil Gaiman, the story starts with potential but fascination turns into random side stories filled with obscene nonsense. Find a better read, or if you must, stop after the Sandman stories turn to other characters and save yourself the disappointment.

Brilliant and Exhausting
Revisado: 10-14-21
I finally finished Monsters of Men. The voice of the writing is mighty and the the voice of the Land and the planet is fascinating. So then why did Ness and his editors have to torture us with such a ludicrous plot?!
That many forced plot twist in succession is criminal. I cry reader abuse! But I kept reading because the voice and Voice are so brilliant. What a beautiful idea.
The Mayor is the most deus-ex-machina character I've ever read. (Also, potentially the most killable.) 😂 Everything he does works out and he foresees it, not for any discernible logic or brilliance, but because the author makes it happen.
But then there are characters like The Sky and Ben and Wilf (sp? Ah audiobooks...) that are brilliant.
If you’ve come this far in the trilogy, read this one. It has some of the best and worst of the three books. But don’t expect another Knife of Never Letting Go.

The conclusion of the Mistborn trilogy fulfills all the promise of the first two books. Revelations abound, connections rooted in early chapters of the series click into place, and surprises, as satisfying as they are stunning, blossom like fireworks to dazzle and delight. It all leads up to a finale unmatched for originality and audacity that will leave listeners shaking their heads in wonder, as if awaking from an amazing dream.

Deus Ex Machina
Revisado: 10-04-20
In allomantic terms, The Final Empire is feruchemy, balanced and precise in execution. I have not read such an engaging fantasy novel since The Name of the Wind. The Well of Ascension is hemalurgy, messy and ruinous, dragging the reader through endless pages as Ruin dragged Vin and Elend and co. over miles of ash-sodden dominances. The Hero of Ages is allomancy, full of Preservation’s deus ex machina moments. The Final Empire is so good, I cannot tell you not to read 2 and 3. I did, and I do not regret it. But I will go back to read the Final Empire—heck, I want to now—but I will not reread these two, I think.

Historia
Apricot Irving grew up as a missionary’s daughter in Haiti. Her father was an agronomist, a man who hiked alone into the deforested hills to preach the gospel of trees. Her mother and sisters spent their days in the confines of the hospital compound they called home. As a child, this felt like paradise to Irving; as a teenager, it became a prison. Outside of the walls of the missionary enclave, Haiti was a tumult of bugle-call bus horns and bicycles that jangled over hard-packed dirt, road blocks and burning tires triggered by political upheaval....

Revisado: 06-07-20
Irving tells this story of missions in Haiti with skill, vulnerability, honesty, and grace. The story engages with searing honesty and continues without pretense and with great grace to its conclusion. Irving’s story is unique and immersive. As a missionary kid, this is the most freeing and true telling of a childhood such as ours.

Historia
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

I cannot stop listening to this book
Revisado: 04-03-19
Read these books. You will read them again and again. They are long and complex, and they will enrapture you with their intensity with every step Kvothe takes.
This second book is more visceral than the first, growing in maturity with Kvothe’s age. Be warned that the violence and sexuality grow up with him. His cultures and travels are fascinating, and the intensity mounts with each chapter.
Podehl destroyed any misgivings I had about his narration with this second book. He does it all—singing, grunting, old and young—and does it well.
