Historia
Towards the end of the 19th century and for the first few years of the 20th, a strange invasion took place in Britain. The citadel of power, privilege, and breeding in which the titled, land-owning governing class had barricaded itself for so long was breached. The incomers were a group of young women who, 50 years earlier, would have been looked on as the alien denizens of another world - the New World, to be precise. From 1874 - the year that Jennie Jerome, the first known "Dollar Princess", married Randolph Churchill - to 1905, dozens of young American heiresses married into the British peerage....

A Deep Dive Into 1890’s Social History
Revisado: 09-19-19
If you already have some knowledge of the Gilded Age many of the characters here will already be familiar, but this book delves deeper into the lives of many of the players of that era. The work is well researched and there are several interesting personal letters quoted. I couldn’t give 5 stars because the narration was so jarring at times. The narrator would try different voices for some characters and the voices were generally unconvincing and distracting. When trying for an American woman’s voice she usually sounded like a possessed child in a horror movie. Honestly very creepy.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Another Excellent Book from Madeline Miller
Revisado: 09-06-19
Madeline Miller brings Greek mythology to life in her beautifully written books. I could not stop listening to this (or her other novel Circe) and had this playing in the car, in the kitchen while cooking, while walking the dogs and finally lying in bed at night. The narration is excellent.

Historia
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Historia
They were confidantes to British prime ministers, poets, writers, and artists, their lives entwined with the most celebrated and scandalous figures of the day, from Oscar Wilde to Henry James. They were the lovers of great men - or men of great prominence... They lived in a world of luxurious excess, a world of splendor at 44 Belgrave Square and later at the even more vast Clouds, the exquisite Wiltshire house on 4,000 acres, the "house of the age", designed in 1876 by the visionary architect Philip Webb - the model for Henry James' The Spoils of Poynton.

Excellent In Every Respect
Revisado: 08-26-19
The book is a fascinating blend of social history, political history, and art history. Very well written and beautifully narrated, I’ve enjoyed it more then any other audio book I have recently listened to. If I had one critical comment it would be that the title is a little misleading, it sounds as though you’re going to hear about some frivolous and naughty socialites when in fact they only lived somewhat unrthodoxly for their time and were quasi-intellectual bohemians. However, I was not disappointed and the book was so much more interesting than I expected. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Historia
The People We Hate at the Wedding is the story of a less than perfect family. Donna, the clan’s mother, is now a widow living in the Chicago suburbs with a penchant for the occasional joint and more than one glass of wine with her best friend while watching House Hunters International. Alice is in her thirties, single, smart, beautiful, stuck in a dead-end job where she is mired in a rather predictable, though enjoyable, affair with her married boss. Her brother Paul lives in Philadelphia with his older, handsomer, tenured track professor boyfriend.

Had To Force Myself to Finish Listening
Revisado: 07-08-17
Unsympathetic and poorly developed characters with a weak plot line, I would have abandoned this story but was curious as to how the author would redeem them. Not well as it turned out.
