Historia
Fresh off the first murder case to hit the small town of Briar Reef in more than fifty years, Detective Celia Sparks finds herself knee-deep in another mysterious murder. Everyone in town knew Melissa Sherry was stepping out on her husband, including the man himself. After losing his high-paying job and having to take a job at the meat packing plant just to put food on the table, Gil was already a man beaten; now, everyone he knew was laughing at him behind his back. So, when his wife was found staked out on the main road leading into town in the dead of night with an unflattering word ...

A mystery ???
Revisado: 05-11-24
100 % pure decadence and smut . There was a degree of depravity in all of the main characters . Usually there are pluses to audio rather than print , but ,other than the pleasant British accent of the narrator, this was a story not worth telling . SMH

Historia
It’s fair to say that Maddie’s life in London is far from rewarding. With a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana (yet still somehow manages to be overbearing), Maddie is the primary caretaker for her father, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s. At work, her boss is a nightmare and Maddie is tired of always being the only Black person in every meeting.

I purchased this book in both the digital and audiobook formats . The story started very slow . I do not usually react to books with so much personal introspection , and I almost gave up on reading this in print form until I switched to audio . I would have probably missed a lot of the author’s characterizations had I not listened . Reading through the inflections of my very American interpretation of language I would have not grasped the nuances and differences of her British and Ghanaian counterparts . The author was not descriptive in delineating her characters . I wanted to say to Maddie when she first encountered Ben “don’t go there “ , or her mother who was as self centered a character as I’ve ever encountered . The fact that in spite of how she was treated by coworkers, flatmates and family she remained selfless throughout .
