The writing is absolutely brilliant, but the story is hard to follow, veers off on too many tangents in my humble opinion, and the conclusion was unsatisfying for me. The narration is absolutely spot on though and I really enjoyed listening.

Extremely well researched and fact-checked, with impeccable sources. It was hard to listen to, but I feel this is one of the most important works of nonfiction in recent years.

This is the “Hillbilly Elegy” J.D. Vance had neither the literary skill nor the life experience to write. Absolutely incredible. Brilliant job by the narrator as well. Few books have made me cry, laugh, or think as hard.

Incredible work, completely transported me. I learned a great deal about the history of the region, but also marveled at the authors incredible ability to capture the voices of the different character so perfectly. I thought the narrator did a fantastic job, I have no idea what people are complaining about there. One of the best audiobooks I’ve ever heard. Highly recommended.

Excellent writing, but I would have liked a bit more detail on exactly how the war escalated to the point of (spoiler alert?) massacres and horrific torture of southern Reds by northern Blues. Despite the growing polarization in America, I really needed a bit more detail to understand how we got there. It’s hard to imagine it really was all about fossil fuels and climate change.

The descriptions of massacres and torture were almost too much for me. I would caution anyone with PTSD against listening to this audiobook.

The book does a great job of breaking down progressive economic and political theory.

Lots of great points but nothing too radical. Reads like a Powerpoint presentation of a doctoral thesis. :-) A bit of a slog to get through, honestly.

Chronicles with astonishing detail and journalistic integrity the rise of the Kusher and Trump dynasties.

The epilogue contains one of the most inspirational passages about hope that I've heard in a long time.

Andrea Bernstein deserves a Pulitzer for this!!

This book presents a very solid argument that we humans are on the verge of committing species-level suicide, and taking out large chunks of life on Planet Earth along with us. McKibben lays the blame squarely on Ayn Rand and her followers, and makes a pretty compelling case for it. I found this book both terrifying and inspiring. However, the narrator's voice was a poor fit for the material. He sounds like those guys who do Sci Fi movie trailer voiceovers... "In a world..."! Fortunately the writing makes up for this. I would much rather have listened to McKibben himself read his excellent book.
