Historia
Seabiscuit was one of the most electrifying and popular attractions in sports history and the single biggest newsmaker in the world in 1938, receiving more coverage than FDR, Hitler, or Mussolini. But his success was a surprise to the racing establishment, which had written off the crooked-legged racehorse with the sad tail.

This is as great a book as everyone says it is. A great American story about fascinating characters, and marvelously written. Seabiscuit (the horse) is the best part.

Historia
Gates of Fire puts you at the side of valiant Spartan warriors in 480 BC for the bloody, climactic battle at Thermopylae. There, a few hundred of Sparta’s finest sacrificed their lives to hold back the invading Persian millions. The time they bought enabled the Greeks to rally - saving, according to ancient historian Herodotus, “Western democracy and freedom from perishing in the cradle.” How did the Spartans accomplish this superhuman feat? This is what the King of Persia hopes to learn from the sole Spartan survivor.

Amazing Story.
Revisado: 12-20-18
This is a great story, written extremely well. The performance is solid, too. If you are interested in this period of history, or just in good historical writing, you should listen to this book.

Historia
When Rome transgresses upon his father's domain that lays between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, Pacorus, a prince of the Parthian Empire, is sent to exact revenge. After a string of victories, Pacorus and his men are captured in Cappadocia, clapped in chains, and sent to Italy to live out the rest of their days as slaves. But fate intervenes and Pacorus and his companions are saved from a living hell by a renegade gladiator named Spartacus. In gratitude, Pacorus agrees to help Spartacus build his army as Rome musters its legions to crush the slave uprising.

Not much Depth...
Revisado: 12-20-18
None of the characters are particularly likable, or even developed very well--especially the main character. There is action, though, just not very well portrayed. The performance is not that great either. Some of the accents are really ridiculous and should just be avoided. Still, it's long, and tells a kind of interesting story.

Meh.
Revisado: 03-17-18
Would you try another book from Ken Follett and/or John Lee?
No, if this is Follett's best book (as I've heard) I'll pass on the rest.
What was most disappointing about Ken Follett’s story?
This book was a melodrama. The antagonists were completely evil--without a redeeming quality. Very unrealistic. Also, the sex scenes (there are several) are WAAAYYY too graphic. I got to the point where I just skipped them. They don't add anything to the story.
Which scene was your favorite?
I suppose my favorite scenes were where the antagonists get their comeuppance.
Was The Pillars of the Earth worth the listening time?
Not really.
Any additional comments?
The reader did a good job with it.
