Excellent book
Revisado: 12-03-17
The only problem with the book was the sound quality. The other thing that would’ve been nice was to have an update as to how Carl Sagan might have thought about the state of the cosmos now.

Historia
Scott Adams was one of the earliest public figures to predict Donald Trump’s election. The mainstream media regarded Trump as a lucky clown, but Adams - best known as “the guy who created Dilbert” - recognized a level of persuasion you only see once in a generation. We’re hardwired to respond to emotion, not reason, and Trump knew exactly which emotional buttons to push. The point isn’t whether Trump was right or wrong, good or bad. Adams goes beyond politics to look at persuasion tools that can work in any setting - the same ones Adams saw in Steve Jobs.

Don't waste your time
Revisado: 11-03-17
The author displays faulty reasoning from start to finish. He is an authority because he took a class in hypnosisis and must be right because he is wealthy. He scoffs at the possibility that Trump might be a sociopath although there is considerable evidence to support that point of view. There is no correlation between the ideas he professes and the examples he gives. My only regret in reading this book is that I finished it. This sounds like cult worship to me.

Historia
Throughout history, thinkers from mathematicians to theologians have pondered the mysterious relationship between numbers and the nature of reality. In this fascinating book, Mario Livio tells the tale of a number at the heart of that mystery: phi, or 1.6180339887.... This curious mathematical relationship, widely known as "The Golden Ratio", was discovered by Euclid more than 2,000 years ago. Since then it has shown a propensity to appear in the most astonishing variety of places.

Historia
For the past 15 years, acclaimed science writer Margaret Wertheim has been collecting the works of "outsider physicists," many without formal training and all convinced that they have found true alternative theories of the universe. Jim Carter, the Einstein of outsiders, has developed his own complete theory of matter and energy and gravity that he demonstrates with experiments in his backyard - with garbage cans and a disco fog machine he makes smoke rings to test his ideas about atoms.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-14-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The first part of the book was interesting but then deteriorated when there was no evidence to support his claims.
If you’ve listened to books by Margaret Wertheim before, how does this one compare?
This is the only one I have read/listened to.
Was Physics on the Fringe worth the listening time?
No. I was intrigued by the Carter character but annoyed that there was no scientific basis for his beliefs.I don't understand how someone with training in physics can write about nonsense just because the fellow is very bright. .

Would you try another book from John Brockman and/or David Colacci and Susan Ericksen ?
Not likely.
What was most disappointing about John Brockman’s story?
There was no substance to it. As I listened to the entire book I was getting angry at myself for continuing in the expectation that things would get better.
What about David Colacci and Susan Ericksen ’s performance did you like?
They were good.

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Far too long
Revisado: 10-05-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No , it is far too long. This book could have conveyed everything in 8 or 10 hrs. By the end of the book I felt that I had wasted my time. There were interesting portions but...
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Perhaps, because the chances are it would be over in 3 hrs or less.

Historia
Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

In his last book, Neil Shubin delved into the amazing connections between human anatomy—our hands, our jaws—and the structures in the fish that first took over land 375 million years ago. Now, with his trademark clarity and exuberance, he takes an even more expansive approach to the question of why we are the way we are.

Yes, because it's loaded with interesting information.
Any additional comments?
I have read or listened to many books related to this topic. It is amazing how they all seem to refer to different scientists who bring new insights and make our understanding that much better.

Interesting read but ending prolonged
Revisado: 03-11-13
What made the experience of listening to The Lost Symbol the most enjoyable?
It was a good mystery but lasted 2 hours beyond the logical ending. Full of unexpected turns.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mal'akh because he was unpredictable.
Any additional comments?
The introduction of noetic science, religion and "ancient wisdom" would be objectionable if not part of a fictional plot.

What did you love best about The Willpower Instinct?
Some very simple ideas that are the opposite of what I had previously thought. Now to see if they will work. I can certainly relate to guilt and "what the hell" concepts. Many people might benefit from the suggestions in this book.
