The 3rd book in the series isn't available. The 4th is, so why on earth wouldn't you.make the 3rd book available? As soon as a series has me feeling like I've wanted my time, I give it a one star rating.

Historia
As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

Excellent production! I find that there are two camps; those who like multi-cast productions, and those who hate them. If you are in the former camp, and you enjoy horror-scifi, then this may be for you. The sound engineering and over all production quality made this a great experience.

Excellent addition to the genre
Revisado: 05-20-18
Let's start wit the narrator/story combination. George Guidall is Walt Longmire. The accent, pace and inflection is the perfect pairing.
As for the story, let's just say that the local and characters sound and feel authentic. A touch of the mystic, but not too much, adds another layer to the texture of the story, while the portrayal of Native American's is done with respect.
If the TV series brought you to this series, then be prepared to impressed. The book is head and shoulders better than the TV series.

Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

More than a Shipwreck story
Revisado: 08-12-17
There is so much history out there that is absolutely fascinating but is hidden or presented in an uninteresting format. The author here has found an amazing story and put it all together in a riveting story. One would think this is fiction, but it's not.
One aspect that really stood out for me was the study embedded in the story about human behaviour. This is something that could be used as a case study in some courses.
There are some great life lessons in this book as well. The power of positive thinking, tenacity, cooperation and compromise and, above all, the benefit of having a repertoire of skills obtained through learning and practice. One of the main characters was a veritable "McGyvor" 150 years ago.
So, if you have an interest in amazing true stories, or have an interest in how humans behave under exceptionally trying circumstances, then give this book a listen.

Very imaginative - Classic Gaiman
Revisado: 12-25-16
This is classic Neil Gaiman, as the story takes place at the intersection of the real world and an alternate world. Lucky for us, the readers, Neil has a large number of universes to explore.
Many author read works suffer as a result. No so in this case; Mr. Gaiman really understands his characters and his voice acting is good enough to make the work come alive.
I won't give anything away here, but if you are blessed with an excellent imagination, are accepting of alternate realities, and enjoy an old fashioned fairy tale, albeit a very dark one that explores the boundaries of sanity, then give this a try.

Interesting concept and story
Revisado: 11-27-16
As a complete package, I'd have to say this audio book was a bit above average. The narration was good, but not spectacular. The story, while unique, could have been better executed.
Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, as I understand this is the authors first work, and it does indeed feel like a first work.
Would I recommend this book? If you like post apocalyptic stories and are able to imagine ESP and other psychic phenomena, then you'll likely enjoy the story, just don't expect a masterpiece.

It has aged well!
Revisado: 11-27-16
I first read this book and saw the mini-series back in the late 1970's. I enjoyed the book so much then that I thought I'd see how the audio book was and to revisit the story.
Well, it's still an excellent tale. As someone else has mentioned, this would be excellent if redone by HBO or another quality production company.
The narration was pretty good, all things considered. This was my first time listening to Lister's narration, and it took me a chapter or two to accept his voice and style, but it quickly grew on me. He was well matched to the task.
Don't let the age of this novel put you off. I highly recommend this book for many reasons.

Underdeveloped characters
Revisado: 05-12-16
I was a bit disappointed in this book for the first 80 percent, but the final part was pretty good. I'd like to give the book 2.5 stars, but I don't have that option.
Allow me to to expand on this. I found that the book jumped in with some ex-Confederate soldiers who just start murdering people in the most violent of manner. They meet up with a 3rd character who joins the group. The problem is, there's no real background to these characters, and they felt very one-dimensional. They had potential to have some great backstories, but the author missed his chance.
The protagonist had a bit more background, but again, not enough to really draw you in. In the last few chapters, and this is where it got better, the story focused on the healing of the young victim through his work with horses. This part of the story stood out, and it's because much more depth was given to the characters for the final bit.
The narration was solid, but nothing spectacular. Bob Rundell did some characters well, and others not-so-well. His cadence was bit slow, but that's in keeping with the western "slow drawl" style.
In the end, I can recommend this book if you're a Louis L'Amour fan or of the genre itself. For those looking for a more in depth cast of characters, such as in "All the Pretty Horses", then you may want to pass.
