Historia
Based on a true story, this debut Civil War novel follows a Southern plantation woman's journey of transforming her home into a hospital for the war. This debut novel is based on the true story of Carrie McGavock. During the Civil War's Battle of Franklin, a five-hour bloodbath with 9,200 casualties, McGavock's home was turned into a field hospital where four generals died. For 40 years she tended the private cemetery on her property where more than 1,000 were laid to rest.

Such mixed feelings…
Revisado: 03-09-25
My Civil War era relatives died like the soldiers in this book. I do not like anything that suggests that slavery is anything but an evil scourge or that the Civil War was anything greater than the Southern oligarchs’ greed and inhumanity run amok. So I have problems with the book’s arguably sympathetic viewpoint, revisionist history, and racist language, however disguised it may seem.

Historia
"I was one of 28 children born to my dad and his three wives. Indoctrinated to believe that the outside world was evil, and that I resided among the righteous, I was destined to marry a man chosen for me by the Prophet. I would then live in harmony with my sister-wives, bear many children, and obey and serve my future husband in this life and throughout eternity. But my innocence didn't last long." Flora goes on from there to tell the dramatic true story of how she ultimately escaped and has been rescuing women and children from the FLDS.

A brave book written by a heroine. The story is peer, gripping, well told. The fundamentalist LDS is plainly a cult of male-dominated
pedophilia, sexual perversion and abuse. The idea that the Texas Supreme Court has now
aided and abetted this “church of lies” at the expense of children, as described in the epilogue, is an affront to basic human rights.

This is such a useful audiobook and a real pleasure to listen to. Aurelias’ philosophy for approaching whatever life throws one’s way is as relevant now as it was then. So good.

Historia
John Saint Ryan has traveled the world working with horses. His behavior with all students—whether equine or human—aligns with his principles, a rare and admirable practice. He shares his knowledge with agility, openness, humor, and grace, often in a poetic manner. This audiobook is a joy to listen to, as you’ll discover John's love and humility when he describes the lessons his mentor, Tom Dorrance, helped him learn. His humor shines through as he recounts horse stories from earlier days.

There is one of the best books about horses I’ve come across, and I read nearly everything I can get my hands on. The author’s attitude with horses is borne of his kindness, skill, experience, and coherence in thought, word, and deed. His calm, steady voice alone shows how we need to be with these magnificent horses.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

What a great, great story! Anyone who’s been involved in athletics or loves American and WWII history or digs those who come of age with character and resilience will thoroughly enjoy this well-told story.
