Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Best Reader EVER
Revisado: 02-04-24
Streep is the VERY BEST READER I have ever heard. Perfect inflection, magnificent emotions, almost if she had lived Lara's life. I'm almost afraid to listen to another book, as everyone else will be a lesser experience. Of course, she had great material here! I've already recommended this to others (who are equally enamored).

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Bad pronunciation ruined this book
Revisado: 07-25-23
Book traveled over some familiar ground for me, having been a female science major in the 60's. Lots of the prejudices and treatments by men Elizabeth experienced were pretty painful to relive.
Unfortunately, the woman chosen to read this story clearly was NOT a scientist and did not do her homework before reading to us. Almost every chemical compound was grossly mispronounced! How ironic: in a book meant to prove women are just as good (or better than) men, we are subjected to a woman who doesn't measure up.
This really destroyed my enjoyment of the story. It was just too jarring and frustrating.

Historia
The Garretts take their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. They hardly ever leave home, but in some ways they have never been farther apart. Mercy has trouble resisting the siren call of her aspirations to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. Their teenage daughters, steady Alice and boy-crazy Lily, could not have less in common.

Historia
National Book Award finalist Ivan Doig had only a vague memory of his mother until he discovered a cache of her letters. They revealed a passionate, can-do woman who loved the lilting rhythm of words. A moving prequel to his acclaimed memoir This House of Sky, Doig’s Heart Earth highlights his childhood before his mother’s death and eloquently captures the texture of the American West, the fortunes of a family, and one woman’s indomitable spirit.

Stechschulte sounds so much like I imagine Doig must have. Loved learning about his family, especially his mother. This is the only Doig book I had not read, and I am so glad it was the last. A fitting tribute.

An inspirational man
Revisado: 10-23-20
I'm a child of the 60's and Rather covered so many of the transformational stories. Listening to him was like history coming alive. Yet, he spoke of these events as a person who felt, not just witnessed, the actions. When he speaks of some especially emotional times, even though they are 50 or more years past, his voice cracks with the pain. This would not have been half as rewarding had I merely read his words: I needed to hear him say them.

Kingsolver is the best narrator I've ever heard. Amazing accents and inflections. Story was fantastic. I just returned from a two week camping trip to the areas where the story takes place, and I felt like I was still there, savoring the deserts and canyons. Her love of the land and its people is evident in every chapter.

Historia
In Susan Orlean's mesmerizing true story of beauty and obsession is John Laroche, a renegade plant dealer and sharply handsome guy, in spite of the fact that he is missing his front teeth and has the posture of al dente spaghetti. In 1994, Laroche and three Seminole Indians were arrested with rare orchids they had stolen from a wild swamp in south Florida that is filled with some of the world's most extraordinary plants and trees. Laroche had planned to clone the orchids and then sell them for a small fortune to impassioned collectors.

a little too deep, a little too long
Revisado: 02-13-19
I would have enjoyed it more as a short story. It seemed to wander across Florida, with all sorts of tidbits hitch hiking on the orchid story. The reader had times where her voice dripped with sarcasm, and I wasn't sure whether she was amused about the characters or was bored and trying to liven it up a bit.

Historia
One-third of the Earth's surface is classified as desert. Restless, unhappy in love, and intrigued by the Desert Fathers who forged Christian monasticism in the Egyptian desert, William Atkins decided to travel in eight of the world's driest, hottest places. Each of his travel narratives effortlessly weaves aspects of natural history, historical background, and present-day reportage into a compelling tapestry that reveals the human appeal of these often inhuman landscapes.

A mixed bag
Revisado: 10-10-18
I thoroughly enjoyed those parts of the book where the author described his experiences in the deserts, and some of his historical accounts are interesting. But, some were so detailed and lengthy they interfered with the flow of his narrative. For example, the micro-details of all the atomic explosions set off around the world seemed unnecessary, and the endless discussion of illegal immigrants in the US had me longing for a return to the story for which I bought the book. Had I been editing this book, it would have been shorter in these tangents! One last observation: yes, the reader did have a British accent, but still. . .he should have learned proper pronunciations of our Native peoples (Paiute was mangled) and vegetation (Saguaro does not have a hard g in either English or Spanish).
