It was entertaining and fairly scary. I love that it makes my imagination spook me being a grown man. I love old radio shows and this seems to be the next level, an unexpected rebirth of audio entertainment.

Generic, boring, reaching for some kind of twist but never quite getting there.
Revisado: 09-17-24
The title had me believe that this would be about cold cases but it’s completely different from what I expected. I feel like the main characters acting job is pretty sub par, un engaging and sloppy,
Over all I feel bored out of my mind.
I also don’t appreciate the little election interference twist and the reference to a independently wealthy billionaire who’s going to protect 2nd amendment rights and try and get the economy back on track, yet….he’s really the criminal and he’s trying to “hack the election” to beat the current governor of Illinois who’s fighting for equality. Yikes. You totally lost me there.
Chicago politicians, all democrat, are some of the most corrupt politicians in the United States. Especially the governor of Illinois. Chicago is a violent corrupt hell hole, So I gave up on listening to this semi entertaining melodrama after the little lefty twist on the plot line which seems to be so prevalent today in entertainment.
Even if it wasn’t for that little plot twist, I would have continued to listen to this. It really is boring.

Historia
At a remote little inn not far from the Kansas homestead of Laura Ingalls Wilder lived the Bender family. These pioneers welcomed unwary visitors with jackrabbit stew and a sledgehammer to the skull. In time, their apple orchard gave up its secrets - a burial ground for their mutilated victims, each stripped of their possessions. The devilish enterprise on “Hell’s Half-Acre” would earn the Bloody Benders an undying place in the annals of American infamy. But it was the mysterious fate of eldest daughter, Kate, that would make them the stuff of mythic campfire prairie tales.

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzu’s Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today’s Black community. By telling the story of one man’s struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesn’t change; it just has a different swagger.

One of my favorite writers in history. Jewels out of shit. A masterpiece of violent poetic prose
Revisado: 02-16-23
“He was excited like a rapist in a hospital for the blind.”
I love Ice Berg slims writing style. He truly was a master story teller. He had a way of describing the brutal reality of life in the ghetto with the poetic prose of a master writer using language and terms, Street slang, one of the other languages spoken in this country, unknown to most people raised in middle class suburbia.
A pimps life is a world of shit covered in fine Lenin’s, diamonds, and all of the other finer things in life. Ice Bergs reality was harsh, unforgiving, and out of his control for the first years of his tragic life. Violent, dangerous, treacherous.
Something most people don’t know about the Pimp is that he’s a Robin Hood, a hero in the ghetto because he’s managed somehow to pull himself up through sheer brutality and cunning to have the finer things in life.
This is one of my favorite writers of all time.

Historia
On August 5, 1942, giant pillars of dust rose over the Russian steppe, marking the advance of the 6th Army, an elite German combat unit dispatched by Hitler to capture the industrial city of Stalingrad and press on to the oil fields of Azerbaijan. The Germans were supremely confident; in three years, they had not suffered a single defeat. The Luftwaffe had already bombed the city into ruins. German soldiers hoped to complete their mission and be home in time for Christmas.

Truly a masterpiece
Revisado: 10-28-22
Brutal, beautiful, complex, incredibly well researched, written, and narrated.
It’s also not for the faint of heart. If you get squeamish, I would suggest listening to something else. It’s the reality of war, when 2 sadistic narcissistic tyrants go to war.
This is one of the best audio books I have ever heard.

If you want to discover the history of the Roman Games, then pay attention...What were the Roman games? What was it like for gladiators in the arenas of ancient Rome? How thrilling was it to see chariot races on the Roman race track? Were the condemned really thrown to lions at the Circus Maximus? These are a few of the questions that will be explored in this audiobook. The Romans were known for their extensive civilization, but at the heart of Roman power was a penchant for the Roman games.

Appreciate the quality but want more details
Revisado: 09-05-22
I was surprised by the fact the book is a little over 3 hours long. That says lack of detail to me. I appreciate the quality of the narration, the details regarding the Roman games, which gladiators were apart, but I found myself desiring more gore. More gory detail. It’s a book about Gladiators yet there were no details regarding the training, weapons, armor, tactics, and battles that must have been apart of so many of the gladiators stories given the far reach of the Roman Empire, were they all came from, kidnapped or arrested from many different cultures all over the known world. I was especially disappointed with the lack of info when it came to the female gladiators. There must have been some names, possible backgrounds? Man I was excited when I saw the fact that there were female gladiators but then there was no real detail as to who they were. How did they get to be gladiators in a time of everything being male dominated, especially an institution like that. I want to know stories about different gladiators, what they used, what they ate, what was their day like, how old were most of them when they first took part in the games, and what average age did they live to? I felt disappointed in the book within the first few chapters but Amazon apparently is punishing me and won’t let me return this book. Amazon is starting to suck to,

Loved the movie, almost didn’t make it through the book
Revisado: 09-02-22
I love the movie on Netflix, so I got the audio book.
I thought this book started off strong. I like the descriptions of the weapons and, I don’t know why, but I enjoy detailed descriptions of violent things. Like when the bullet hits someone’s body, what happens to the internal organs ect. I like gory detail. However, there’s to much damn detail, in my opinion, when it comes to side characters. To much wasted time and dialogue. The side characters seem to be cartoony and generic.
I thought the narrator was a super pro. Top of his field. But then he would speak in the voices of the children, or the female characters, or different accents, and it kind of threw me. What else was he supposed to do, I get it, But it ruined some of the sections for me. Like the French female vet assistant towards the end. The book became something I had to get through instead of something I did not want to end.

How many western movies were borrowed from?
Revisado: 04-09-22
I haven’t read other reviews yet but within the first 3 “chapters” (I didn’t know chapters could be so short and insignificant) I can easily tell that most of the story line, dialogue, characters, plot line, all have been snipped or stolen from every Western or Bounty Hunter movie ever made.
Come on. Maybe write something new or original rather than repackage lines and plots from movies or TV shows I’ve seen my whole life.
I was really excited to start this book but the canned nature of everything in this story became so transparent, I can almost guess what’s going to be said or done next before it happens.
The man reading the book is great. The production is great, and I enjoy his voice and professionalism, but the book itself is thin, has no real grit or unique drama, and, you can dress a turd up like an Easter egg, but it’s still a turd.

I turned the app on, the download was easily obtainable, my cat sat next to me, he was warm and soft and old. There were many details, the story was sharp and to the point, many lived, and some died. It made me happy, it made me sad 😢. I loved it.
