Historia
Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

From a breeze to a whirlwind
Revisado: 04-17-24
the magic system, the lore and the setting are all fascinating. it's well written and was easy to read. I liked the characters and I liked the opening. but halfway through it feels like it turns into a whirlwind of events. The main character goes from one thing to the next and there's not enough clear content about the consolidation or evolution of the main characters thinking. I feel like there needed to be some moments where the pace of the story slows down and the character is able to make well explained break through a during those periods but I felt like I kept waiting and never getting that moment. Still an enjoyable read though and very captivating.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

would be better with less romance
Revisado: 11-18-23
If the author dialed back the amount of romance in the book it would be a 5 star book. The world is interesting and the lore is cool and the action is good. the romance is just way too much. felt like I was reading the diary of a college party girl sometimes.

very generic
Revisado: 02-22-23
Boy wants to leave home to go on grand adventures but inevitably becomes a whiny brat who can't do anything without crying internally. He also has the classic problem of never talking about his feelings, but somehow always pulls through in the difficult situations. No knock on the narrator he did great with what he was given.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Intriguing, sad, empowering, and frustrating.
Revisado: 02-22-23
A great read. I highly recommend reading this memoir. It's very well written and narrates a gripping story. I've always felt strange about memoirs though especially since in the author's own words... "who writes history? I write history..." a phenomenal read though makes you think and feel things deeply.

I feel conflicted...
Revisado: 12-16-22
There are parts about this story that are great. It's immersive, easy to read, the story flows well and has a nice balance of action and world building. The world and concept of the world is interesting and for the most part well executed.
There are also parts that could be very very off putting for some readers. It's not PG in the slightest the writer does not beat around the bush in terms of gore, violence, and sensual material. There are also two massively implausible/unrealistic things that occur in the story which I believe could ruin the enjoyment of the story for many people.
1) How has no one thought to do what the protagonist does before? Not necessarily in the offensive sense but in the defensive sense? This thought annoyed the hell out of me. I understand the intent of the writer was to show that our characters live in a world of cowards but humans aren't stupid and the humans in this world are portrayed as incredibly dumb and lacking in creativity and ingenuity which has never been the case for the human race.
2) One of the main characters gets r*ped and their recovery from that is far, far to quick. I think the writer unintentionally lightens the gravity of what happened to her which is not okay and it doesn't appropriately take into account nor portray how traumatic and debilitating this can be it's totally unrealistic. However I don't want to just bash the writer on this and I don't want to assume he doesn't know this and so in his defense I can see what he intended based on the overarching theme of this book which is about the main characters being symbols of breaking free from the things in their life that hold them back. The writer intended to create characters who inspired people to do the same, to fight against injustice and oppression and be beacons of strength. However the way he does this is not realistic nor does it make the characters feel relatable. I feel like he should have made the book longer and taken his time showing the mental character development that happens.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 11-30-22
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. it's not perfect but it has an engaging story that makes you want to root for the main character. The rpg mechanics are well thought out and the book does a good job of making the main character unique without making overpowered. I will say that the main character does give very strong high school boy vibes but he is a high school boy so even though his behavior was sometimes annoying it fit with who the character was.

Historia
The Academy of Chaenbalu has stood against magic for centuries. Hidden from the world, acting from the shadows, it trains its students to detect and retrieve magic artifacts, which it jealously guards from the misuse of others. Because magic is dangerous: Something that heals can also harm, and a power that aids one person may destroy another. Of the academy’s many students, only the most skilled can become Avatars - warrior thieves, capable of infiltrating the most heavily guarded vaults - and only the most determined can be trusted to resist the lure of magic.

A little bit juvenile but surprised at the themes of segregation and shaming involved in this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I hope the main character gets a little smarter though.

Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Good narrator difficult to understand the story
Revisado: 05-25-22
I think I may just need to give it another listen but it felt very difficult to understand what was going on. All the characters names are difficult to remember and I never felt like I understood the significance of the non-fighting portions of the book. Could also just be that I listen to books while working so maybe this is just the kind of book you really need to dedicate attention to to fully appreciate. The narrator did a good job though.

The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.
