Historia
As a wielder of domestic magic, Finlay Ashowan likes to keep his affairs as neat and orderly as his kitchen. But between his work for the King and Queen of Daxaria and a new (secret) relationship with Lady Annika Jenoure, his life is anything but tidy. For one thing, if Annika and Fin are to continue their romance, they’ll need to sort out the pesky issue of Fin’s being a commoner—before Annika is forced into a political marriage that interferes with her own carefully laid plans. For another, pressure is mounting as the war with Troivack draws ever closer.

Red Head
Revisado: 02-08-25
This is such an entertaining series. That said, the continuous references to Fin as "the Redhead " are so annoying that I may not finish this one. Are the remaining books like this? With the otherwise very good quality of writing, this one juvenile conceit is baffling to me. Great narrator though! I can always tell who's speaking.

She lived there as a child with her beloved foster parents, and now she believes it might be the only place left for her. Beautiful writing, ugly subject matter
Revisado: 05-10-24
This is a beautifully written book depicting horrifying acts of violence against children. Weirdly, I guessed the villain the moment he appeared which is rare for me. It seemed very obvious in this book. As always, Marin Ireland is a stellar narrator.

Narration is ruining the book!
Revisado: 02-12-23
I've made my way through the 1st 2 of this trilogy but the narration is abysmal. I'm trying to get through the 3rd because it seems like a good story, but every time Ms. Lee attempts an American accent I want to give up. All Americans are not from Texas or whatever this mess of an accent is supposed to be! Sadly there are American characters in all 3 books. It's pretty unbearable.

N Word in 1st Chapter
Revisado: 03-15-21
I have long been a fan of Ms. Harris' story telling. I started to listen to Shakespeare's Landlord yesterday and was stunned by the completely egregious use of the N word. It was so distracting, upsetting and completely unnecessary I couldn't continue with the book and immediately returned it. Ms. Harris and her editors need to fix this jarring obscenity at the very least, and an apology would also be appropriate.

After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can't help wondering what new torment fate has in store. To her utter mortification, Quinn Sullivan—a.k.a. Sir McHotpants—witnesses it all then keeps turning up like a pair of shoes you lust after but can't afford. The last thing she expects is for Quinn—the focus of her slightly, albeit harmless, stalkerish tendencies—to make her an offer she can't refuse.

Demeaning
Revisado: 07-01-20
I listened to this book previously and remember enjoying it. Now I'm thinking it was post-surgery and I was on heavy meds. This book and performance caused me to cringe multiple times. It is unspeakably demeaning to women. When the narrator speaks as Janie, the main character, she is suddenly speaking in a little girl's voice. Disgusting. This is supposed to be an incredibly intelligent, accomplished and beautiful young woman. Maybe this is all typical of the romance genre, but it's incredibly offputting. All of this in addition to the just plain bad writing. I remember now why I don't like romance novels.

Historia
The Truth Doesn't Always Set You Free. In 1987, the dirty war that will last twelve years and kill thirty thousand Peruvians finally reaches up through the Andean cloud forest for Nina and her family. Nina's father is shot by soldiers, her mother raped, and her brother lost to the shadowy ranks of Shining Path guerrillas. And when Agustín Malqui, the village pastor, files a legal complaint against the military, it's no surprise when he disappears in the middle of the night - just another casualty of the military regime.

Unspeakable Narration
Revisado: 12-28-18
This may be an amazing book, but unless I read it myself I'll never know. I had to stop listening almost immediately because of the narrator's mangled pronunciation of the very frequently used Spanish words. Maybe I'm mistaken, but it seems to me that if you're recording a book that takes place in Peru, and you see that said book is liberally peppered with Spanish, you would hire a narrator who can actually speak Spanish. Silly me.

How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him - not disgust, not horror, but excitement? As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence 'Pookie' Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem.

Narrator Ruins Book
Revisado: 05-05-17
While this is a breezy, entertaining book, the narrator's unspeakable accents and halting delivery make it excruciating listening. How bizarre that a young Chinese-Mexican would be made to sound like an ancient Chinese man! Couldn't hear that character in particular without gritting my teeth. Future beach reading by Jinx Schwartz will have to be via Kindle unless a different narrator is involved.
