Historia
Until that September of 1952, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in the long, hot summer of his seventh year, two groups of migrant workers — and two very dangerous men — came through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm. And suddenly mysteries are flooding Luke’s world.

A Departure and Yet Another Solid Story

Beautifully written stories of 50's rural America.
Revisado: 02-13-24
Grisham paints evocative pictures of rural America post-WWII. This is not a mystery or courtroom drama. Just stories from the perspective of a boy growing up on a small family farm in rural Arkansas. Not much electricity, very little money, and the real opportunities are "up North." But the farmers keep farming, despite the floods, poor price for their crops, and spotty labor. The calendar seems a bit off in this novel. Many of the stories would fit better in the 1930's, rather than early 1950's. But it's very good and highly recommended.

Painfully misogynistic.
Revisado: 02-13-24
If you enjoy stereotypical, predictable, foolish, gullible, stupid young women being violently abused by tall, handsome, cruel misogynists, this one is for you. It was a painful waste of 9 hours. My mistake. I was hoping for the author's redemption but, it never arrived.

Overall, an enjoyable listen.
Revisado: 02-02-23
Short stories, vignettes, and some gags. Not high literature, but well written. Some were quite good. Creative and somewhat humorous. Others I could’ve skipped. Uneven but, overall, an enjoyable, listen.

Painfully bad.
Revisado: 12-08-22
It’s so refreshing when an author can create mystery and suspense with intelligent characters. This is not such a book. The lead character is unbelievably stupid, dull, inattentive, clueless, terribly boring and uninteresting. You will not care what happens to her. She fawns over the first man to show attention and can’t see that he is controlling, manipulative, and generally horrible. His bad behavior is not subtle. But to Rose he can do no wrong. She sees nothing and understands even less. This despite that she is “in college” and that her best friend sees the truth about the boyfriend in about 30 seconds of meeting him. It’s that obvious. Even the 8 year old little brother sees through the boyfriend on first meeting. Very bad and very predictable. Skip this one.

Historia
The drum kit has provided the pulse of popular music from before the dawn of jazz up to the present day pop charts. Kick It, a provocative social history of the instrument, looks closely at key innovators in the development of the drum kit: inventors and manufacturers like the Ludwig and Zildjian dynasties, jazz icons like Gene Krupa and Max Roach, rock stars from Ringo Starr to Keith Moon, and popular artists who haven't always got their dues as drummers, such as Karen Carpenter and J Dilla.

How to make the drums boring.
Revisado: 08-16-22
Drums are exciting! They are sensuous, subtle, soft, loud, outrageous, crazy, driving, swinging, anything but boring. Yet, this writer made the drums as dull as dishwater. The book includes a lot of information and some of it, a little bit, is interesting. it is four times too long or maybe even more too long than that. The tone of the book is at once defensive and apologetic. The book purports not to be about drummers but about the development of the array of percussion instruments drummers have assembled about them to make their music. Yet the author constantly comes back to the perception of the drummer as superfluous, intrusive, and disposable. (And dumb, of course.) Those of us who use these instruments for our living or even for our joy and pleasure, know we we can be intrusive but we are at all times critical and important.

Performances were good. But, not recommended to those with limited listening time.
Revisado: 11-02-20
Not a waste of time but I came close to abandoning it several times. Unfortunately my persistence was not rewarded. The characters are not likable. Maybe that’s the point. They are odd balls with difficult histories. Well written but not much to the story. No real plot. Character sketches, maybe? All related to each other but very disconnected. The future part of the story is not far enough into the future for the changes to the world to be believable. Not recommended.

But Shining is now something more than human. And the scrapyard is no longer just a scrapyard, but a place full of secrets. This life she has built, while empty, is predictable and safe. Revisado: 06-22-20
It’s really about the cats. But it takes a long time to get there. Interesting story about an apocalyptic near future. There’s probably a lot of backstory available in the authors other works. A little too advanced for me. But in the end very enjoyable.

A sexually charged and wickedly funny thriller starring Tony Award-winning actor Billy Crudup, Harry Clarke is the story of a shy Midwestern man leading an outrageous double life as the titular cocky Londoner. Moving to New York City and presenting himself as an Englishman, he charms his way into a wealthy family's life as the seductive and precocious Harry, whose increasingly risky and dangerous behavior threatens to undo more than his persona.

Strong performance; weak story.
Revisado: 04-12-19
Harry Clarke is a completely unlikable character. He was a weird kid who was treated badly by his father so he treats everyone he meets badly. Billy Crudup wasted his formidable talents on this book. The "bonus" of Lillian was unlistenable. The performance, apparently by the author, is awful. I tried twice to listen to it and abandoned it.

Revisado: 06-14-18
This book is not for everyone. Graphic descriptions of sex and violence. Incredibly compelling and well written. Every chapter delivers more than you possibly could have expected. Surprising at every turn. I won’t try to summarize the story; others have done that well. I’ve never read a book like this one. This author is remarkable. The performance is perfect.
