Liked it a lot more than most BookTok sensations!

LIMITED SPOILERS!!! I could have done without them going to London or the singing. I wanted them to make up and the book to end right before they fly to London.

An emotional classic

Has some great prose to unpack. Due to it's lengthy pages dealing with a lot of universal experiences (love, health, cheating, etc) it relates to modern day.

Maybe not the best choice to read if you are struggling with depressing feelings, and haven't come to your own sense of relief in overcoming them.

Looks at some philosophic themes that are becoming almost universal experience as well, such as authenticity, and the nature of being good.

I didn't realize this was a stream of consciousness piece. I am not usually a fan of that.

It also has unpredictable singing/music and multiple breathy voices. The voices enter and exit with large gaps between so the transitions are jarring and the music does not help. Some of the voice performances were hard to listen to. Some just didn't sound how I would expect them to be performed and I may have tuned out. I could not get into it.

There's a lot of sexual fantasy or memories I didn't want to think about, and talking about Jewish people. I don't know what to make of any of it because there were so many parts I just couldn't hear/understand. I feel like there are better things to read or listen to.

Unpopular opinion: I hate Moby Dick

I've tried so many times and different formats with Moby Dick. It's just not for me. I love most classic lit but I can't with this one 😑

Maybe if it were abridged and read by my favorite actors in the whole world. Too much side information from other works at the time. A little too even keeled of a reading but that could just be the text.

It's easy to tune out if you are doing other things. Maybe a bit quiet but not in a way that made me think there was a true audio issue. It wasn't completely monotone so maybe it was my fault for trying to multitask.

I found this book really interesting, and a good review of a promising field of study

This recording sounds a little shrill and I found it too annoying to listen to while doing things.

Can't really comment on the story because the audio/voice issue made it hard to listen for very long. I kept tuning out or pulling my headphones out. Exchanging for a different reading.

A good Austen novel - more cutting than some

Really enjoyed this one. Felt like this could have inspired Jane Eyre. Had some cutting remarks on people's hypocrisy and societal conventions.

I loved the narrator other than the sedate matronly voice used for one of the characters. To be fair it did sorta match that character and wasn't used for very long. The rest of her voices were great!

Good foil relationships

I appreciate the foils of relationships in this novel.

I felt like some of it was a little too coincidental as far as narrating, but there's still a lot to get out of it. I feel like maybe a friend going through a divorce might like this book more than me, as it does a good job of not blaming and summing up when you should stay or go. There's a discussion of being able to look at people's choices and decide whether you need to, or can, stay in their life or not. I really liked that for all relationships (even Platonic), but luckily it wasn't a new message for me.

Hilarious, entertaining AND meaningful

Delightfully funny, heartwarming, meta. Seamlessly transitions between characters in a way a lot of authors can't. They feel fleshed out enough and relatable.

Set at a health resort, the novel explores why people work on their deficiencies and the tragic flaws that people don't see even when they are working to be better and therefore think they are self-aware.They're illogical logicalness in expressing their character failings can maybe be eye opening... I think it makes you search yourself and hope you aren't like that in terms of rigidity and self-blindness.

The novel also deals with the more modern weaknesses with some lighthearted humor. The hipstery yoga-junky health spa with all its uppity staff and needy customers makes for the perfect setting to explore what could go wrong when strangers give up their phones, carbs, and caffeine for a journey of cleansing and growth.

Sorta spoilers below here, but not really:

There were a couple moments where I was sure there were going to be ghosts, and a weird Lovecraftian ending, and was super excited for that, however I'm very happy and satisfied with where the story went instead.

I love that the bad guy is named after a real person. If that doesn't get you curious to read it you're probably a lump.

The reader is wonderful too.

Bad audio recording. Gets loud and then quiet. The mic doesn't pick up enough so combined with the accent it's difficult to understand or follow.
