Women in Vietnam
Revisado: 03-19-25
the author did a good job of presenting the story of a Vietnam War Nurse. The trauma to the warrior patients, the Vietnamese patients, the dustoff pitots, and the medical personal treating them all was hard to listen to. But those details were necessary to this novel. It is clear that the author did a great deal of research to complete this beautifully written novel. I teared up some and grimaced a lot but I made it through with a new appreciation for all those who serve! Thank you

💍 Engaging Story
Revisado: 01-25-23
Engaging story with some complicated characters. I finished this novel in no time. The narration was pretty good for the male characters and not too off-putting for the ladies. It's a long read but it held my interest.

Sexual assault disturbing
Revisado: 01-11-23
I didn't finish this book. I found the misogyny disturbing and the sexual assault too much for me. I got through the first incident, but there appeared to be more to come.

Misogyny!!! to the Extreme
Revisado: 05-24-22
I haven't listened to a Carl Weber book in awhile. This one had a lot of twists and turns and a weak ending -- I'm guessing as a lead in to the next novel.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Love the narration!
Revisado: 12-14-21
This story is full of culture. The narrator gave an excellent performance. I could see the characters and the places. Colson Whitehead is an exquisite story teller. There is so much detail in the character interactions. I loved the life - like mingling of whit and drama.

Great mix of characters!
Revisado: 03-22-21
I enjoyed the book. There's a good mix of characters and the narrator did a good job with most of them. The story kept me guessing up to the very end. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Good narration.
Revisado: 10-16-20
The story started out slow but got interesting a couple of chapters in. Sadly, there are so many characters, twists, and turns it became boring for me. I think if one third of book had been left out it would have made much better reading.

The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything.

Excellent Read
Revisado: 03-27-20
Great Narration! this book takes place in an era I usually avoid reading about in a part of the States I have little interest in. But a good story is a good story. The Giver of Stars has all the elements I enjoy in a novel: mystery, romance, adventure strong women and tough men who aren't threatened by strong women. The story touched on many emotions and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
